Micah frowned – at the non-answer and apology both. “You shouldn’t apologize for other people’s actions.”
Jason hummed. “Maybe I’m apologizing on my own behalf.”
Micah side-eyed Jason. “Why? You’ve been polite to me – nice even.”
The man shook his head – the motion so miniscule, Micah barely picked up on it. “If I was nice, I’d have told you a long time ago to run as far away from this family as humanly possible – while it was still a viable option.”
Micah crossed his arms over his chest, his earlier annoyance making a reappearance. “I had that talk with Uncle Marco already.”
“Really?” Jason’s eyebrows shot upwards again. “Huh. He must like you then.”
Micah snorted in disbelief. “He tried to bribe me into leaving Damon, and when that didn’t work, he resorted to threats. Does that sound like he likes me to you?”
“He wouldn’t have given most people a chance to respond to threats.”
He would have just killed them, in other words.
Micah rested his head against the seat. “I can handle myself,” he muttered, not sure if he was trying to convince himself or the man beside him.
It didn’t matter. Jason didn’t argue with him, and they fell into silence until entering a gated community on the upper east side of Manhattan. Micah had assumed Caprice and Jason resided in an upscale high-rise like Damon, but to his surprise, Jason parked in front of a classic brownstone.
The house was on a corner lot, four stories tall, and easily twice the size of any of its immediate neighbors, but what made it truly stand out was the fact that it had a fenced-in yard. It was snow-covered at the moment, but Micah could imagine how vibrantly green the grass looked in contrast to its muddled brown and gray surroundings in the spring.
“Nice place,” Micah said, truly meaning it as he stepped out of the vehicle. Micah imagined it was easily worth millions – probably well into the eight figures. (Hell, Jason had probably had to sell his soul to get his hands on an actual yard in the city.)
“Caprice wants our kids to a have a place to play as they grow,” he said, seeing how enviously Micah eyed the plot of land.
That’s right. Damon had mentioned they were trying for a baby – without much luck so far, unfortunately.
Unsurprisingly, Jason and Caprice had an excellent security system in place, with Jason having to scan his thumbprint before they were even allowed entrance.
Their home was as lavish on the inside as Micah expected. Taking in the dark wood floors, monochrome color scheme, and oddly familiar metal flower-like decorations on the wall, Micah suspected Caprice had had a hand in decorating Damon’s penthouse.
