She slapped her hands down on the table, pushing herself up. “Look, I don’t care how good-looking, or generous, or sweet on you Damon is, it doesn’t mean you can trust him. You claim he won’t hurt you, even if he finds out you’re a cop, but what if he does, Micah? You have people who care about you. I care about you.” To Micah’s horror, tears sprang into the woman’s eyes. “It’s like you don’t even give a shit. I can’t believe you’re being so careless, and so… so selfish!”

With that parting shot, she marched off, away from their table and out of the restaurant, presumably to the car.

As instinctual as it was for him to defend Damon, Micah had to admit… Tessa wasn’t exactly wrong in her assessment or out of line with her concerns. And he’d just brushed them off – had been brushing them off for weeks – because it was easier to theorize the size of Damon’s cock versus whether or not the man had killed anyone before.

Suffice to say, Micah felt like an asshole.

Glancing up from his bowl of uneaten alfredo, Micah spotted Jasper – who’d been serenely watching his and Tessa’s blowout – munching on a breadstick, seemingly unbothered by his wife’s abrupt exit. “Well,” Micah snapped, annoyed, “aren’t you going to scold me now? Or, you know, at least go after your wife?”

Jasper snorted. “Does it look like I have a death wish to you? She’ll ream me worse than she did you if I attempt to coddle her before she’s calmed down.” The man shrugged. “As for scolding you, well… I guess I just got to trust that you know what you’re doing when it comes to this guy.”

Micah frowned. “Really? Because Tessa clearly doesn’t.” The fact stung despite the validity of her concerns.

Jasper sighed, finally putting down the damn breadstick. “Look, Micah, Tessa’s just stressed. You know how she’s like after having to spend time with her mom, and I don’t want to be that asshole who blames everything on hormones, but, I mean, she is nearly nine months pregnant with twins.” That was a fair point. “It goes without saying that she loves you,” he continued. “We both do. She’s just worried. And, I mean, you can’t exactly blame her considering.”

And that tiny bit of fight that was still in him fled. Micah’s shoulders deflated. “Yeah, I know.”

“Good.” Jasper slapped him on the back. “So, buy her a Butterfinger and tell her you’re sorry tomorrow morning at work, and it’ll be like this never happened, alright?”

Micah nodded.
