‘But you still took it to Elizabeth?’
‘Elizabeth was my . . . my superior. I thought she . . . she needed to know . . . no matter . . . no matter how unlikely.’
Quilty’s voice was weakening again. Dempsey gave him a few moments to regain his breath.
‘Elizabeth didn’t believe . . . didn’t believe it either. Not for a . . . moment. She went to Knowles with it. She didn’t go into . . . into any . . . any detail with . . . with Knowles, she told me. Just very . . . bare bones. And she didn’t name me as . . . as her source.
‘Elizabeth told me that Knowles . . . Knowles laughed it off. Exactly . . . like we both . . . both thought he would. Didn’t even . . . even want to know any more . . . detail. Which put an end . . . to it . . . for us. But then . . . a short . . . short time later . . . Elizabeth was . . . was removed from her . . . position and moved to . . . to . . . to the ISB. Without . . . any . . . explanation.’
Quilty was visibly tiring now. Dempsey could see he wouldn’t get much more from him today.
‘Elizabeth told me that since that day she has never had another conversation with President Knowles,’ Dempsey said.
‘She would know that . . . better than me. All I can say is . . . Elizabeth was moved out of Knowles’ . . . Knowles’ circle very . . . very quickly. No more . . . no more direct access. That’s what made me . . . wonder if there was some truth to it.’
Dempsey nodded. It was exactly as Elizabeth Kirk had described. But that had been where her story had stopped. She had sent Dempsey here to find out if Tom knew anything more.
‘Did you ever investigate any further?’
‘Investigate?’ Quilty laughed. A horrible, hacking expression of humour. ‘Son, I’m in no state to be . . . to be investigating . . . anything. I was already getting . . . getting sick when it all happened. But I made a few more . . . a few more . . . enquiries, yes.’
‘And?’
‘And nothing. Still . . . only that one . . . only that one contact had heard about any of this. But then . . . then . . . Dale Victor.’
The mention of Victor brought Dempsey to his next question.
‘What about Victor? What does he have to do with any of this?’
‘I . . . I . . . spoke . . . I spoke to . . .’
Quilty was trailing off. Dempsey had to speed this up.
‘You spoke to Victor?’
‘I spoke to someone who . . . who worked for him. They . . . they contacted me. Maybe . . . one month . . . ago. Asking questions about that . . . mission.’
