To my Whip-Crackers:

My sister, Kate. I sent you the first half of Power Play, back when I was in need of some independent assurance that it was on track. I got that assurance. And then, almost immediately after that, I started to get daily texts saying simply ‘Any more book?’ In the middle of an Old Bailey murder trial I found myself having to explain why I had not yet had time to finish Chapter 22! For someone who is not in the publishing world, you can push a deadline with the best of them, and boy did I need it this time. So thank you, little sister.

My friend – and the man in need of more books for more plane rides than anyone else I know – Grant Benjamin. Naturally hyper-critical and having read pretty much everything in the genre, the lack of negative feedback as you worked through irregularly delivered tranches of Power Play told me that it must be going okay. Mate, you are a true friend, an amazing support and – like Kate – a very useful and persistent resource when it came to getting the book finished!

To my Book Family:

My amazing editor Pippa and her team, Donna and Genevieve. Three books now, Pippa. Three! How are you still speaking to me? I don’t think I’ll ever get over how much an author owes to his (or her) editor, and I will certainly never underestimate how much this book – and this entire series – owes to you. It’s a full-on tightrope walk, isn’t it? But we’ve walked it okay so far.

The rest of the brilliant team at Elliott and Thompson: Jennie, Sarah, Marianne and, of course, Lorne. As ever, the fact there is a book at all – any of them – is entirely thanks to you guys. I landed on my feet when I met you, I struck gold when Lorne agreed to take me on as a totally untested author, and I won the lottery when you managed to get my first book – Killer Intent – into the Zoe Ball Book Club, and then somehow my second – Marked For Death – into the Richard and Judy Book Club. I don’t and won’t forget how lucky I have been.

Angela, my remarkable publicist, my introduction to the other inhabitants of the crime-writing world, and my trusty guide and tutor as I make my way through the still early stages of a new career. Along with Anthony’s help from behind the scenes, you have been there every step of the way. I’m fairly sure I’d have been lost without you.

And Gill, Sarah and the sales team. It would be a foolish author who underestimates the importance of those who actually get their books into the shops. I cannot thank you enough for ensuring that as many potential readers as possible have the opportunity to pick up and read all three of the Dempsey/Devlin series. And hopefully many more to come.
