“She doesn’t know where she comes from? That’s interesting.” Clarice transferred her gaze to Elle. “Amnesia?”
“I guess. It’s not fun.”
Adam cursed himself. This was what came of socializing. He had said too much. “Miss Burbage, please don’t repeat that.”
“I don’t have to. Ludwig has his ear pressed to the kitchen door.”
Adam looked toward the kitchen door. It was rocking slightly. A nightmare. This was his nightmare.
“It’s okay, Adam. Señor Alfonso and Ludwig aren’t out to get me. Or you.” Elle tapped his plate. “Eat!”
Adam gave in to Elle’s urgings, and after a couple of bites, he relaxed. Amazing what comfort food could bring. “Any sign of your predator, Miss Burbage?”
“No, and I’ve got a training team coming from Hollywood—a guy to teach me to fight, use weapons. A voice coach. An acting coach. I think that’s it. The studio has a lot invested in this picture, so the team will stay in the suite with me, and we’ll work day and night until the filming starts.”
With satisfaction, Adam said, “Your coaching team will give this town something better to gossip about than me and Elle.”
“You underestimate the good people of Gothic. They’re able to keep two story lines separate.” Clarice lifted her chin and smiled. “An added benefit of the team—I’ll be safe. The nasty little slug of a paparazzo won’t be able to get close.”
“Bruno, right?” Adam asked.
“Right.” Clarice stood. “This has been lovely, a much-needed break. I really hate to leave before the next course, but I’ve got to memorize this script.”
“Mr. Kulshan said it’s Shakespeare.” Had the old man got that right?
“Shakespeare updated. We’re bending King Lear.” In a deliberate excess of drama, Clarice put the back of her hand to her forehead. “Such a risk. Elle, I hope you recover your memory soon.”
Adam watched her walk back to her table. “Bending?”
“Gender-bending. Meeting her was interesting. She’s one of my heroes, and she’s nice. You never know, do you? About people.” Elle’s head drooped, and her usually sparkling eyes grew sad.
“What do you remember? Something more than a play?” He didn’t have much hope, but he prompted, “How you got into the ocean would be helpful.”
“In my mind, there’s a stain of disappointment, and it seems to be growing darker, clearer.” Elle patted Adam’s arm. “We’ve done what we can. We’ve met with Dr. Brocklebank, and as far as he was able, he gave me a clean bill of health. I can breathe more freely, and I remember the weirdest stuff, like seeing The Miracle Worker. I need time and quiet and a place to heal. Maybe talking to your psychic friend will help me, too. I know you want me out of your life—”
