  86. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

“The parking area was thoroughly swept to gather evidence and remove the windshield glass.” Clearly, Elle was reconstructing the scene in her mind, too. “It’s not impossible for the card to have flown somewhere no one looked, but odds are someone would have found it. Is the memory card truly lost, or did someone retrieve the camera and remove it, then fling it under the truck?”

“Who? And why?”

“Seeing the photos Bruno took will illuminate the time leading up to his fall.”

“Someone doesn’t want that evidence produced.” Adam hummed with the need to do something. “The crime scene is closed, or I’d go search myself.”

“If it’s there, we could find it.” Elle leaned her head on his shoulder. “I wish Clarice could have told me more.”

“I wish I knew why she couldn’t be specific.” He pushed the swing and thought that, at this moment, he had everything he wanted. To be here, with Elle, at his house while the light faded and the stars popped out and the ocean roared in that grand rhythm that spoke of life and love, loss and eternity. “We’re both uncomfortable with the chain of events as described.”

“Clarice despised Bruno, but she wouldn’t have killed him unless her own life was threatened.”

Logic demanded Adam point out, “You only met Clarice a few days ago.”

“Ten days ago!”

“In the span of a lifetime, that’s not so long, and you’ve spent only a few moments in her company.” He regretted pointing out those germane details. “You don’t actually know. You can’t speak to what she’s capable of doing.”

She seemed undeterred by his good sense. “Haven’t you ever met someone and immediately recognized a soul mate?”

“I don’t believe in soul mates.” Although, if he did, that would lend credence to the City of Lost Souls legend...

“Of course you don’t.” Elle sounded snappish to Adam. “No matter what you believe, I knew immediately Clarice was my friend.”

Adam remembered how the women had bonded over lunch and nodded. “I could see why you would think that.”

“I want to help her and... I don’t know, Adam. There’s something very wrong in the suite occupied by Clarice and her team.”

In the gathering darkness, Adam could clearly hear the trouble in Elle’s voice.

She stood. “I’m going to go look them all up.”

Startled by the abrupt call to action, Adam asked, “Them all who?”

“Faith, Gregoire and Sorcha. I’ll even look up Clarice. Read their official biographies, read any gossip about them, see if there’s a hint of wrongdoing.” She took a step toward the door, then turned back to Adam. “No, not wrongdoing. Murderous intentions. This isn’t like the man who tried to kill me.” She corrected herself. “Who did kill me. Nothing about this points in that direction. Does it?”

“Not that I can see.”
