Prue hits some buttons on her mirrors and the shield goes back up, but I am not sure she’s in time. We duck down behind one of Corden’s large wardrobe trunks and try not to breathe as a flock of gargoyles flies into view. Their high-pitched shrieks nearly pop my eardrums as they zip right by the tree house without even pausing.

“They missed us.” Logan breathes a sigh of relief and starts to rise.

Look out!” Prue cries.

A gargoyle swoops over the deck and tosses a burning scroll onto it. The scroll unfurls, lighting the deck on fire. I catch a quick glimpse of it as it turns to ash.

It’s a WANTED poster. And it’s for all of us.

Another burning scroll lands near it. It’s Sasha’s Enchantasia Insider post. The words YOU CAN’T WIN are written over it in bright red.

“The deck is on fire!” Raina shouts. To my surprise, she runs to one of Corden’s trunks and pulls out a pink satin shoe. She weighs it in her hand for a moment, then takes aim at a gargoyle, spiky heel first. The shoe comes dangerously close to the creature’s wing. It shrieks and flies higher, dropping the next flaming scroll in its grasp.

“The whole tree house is going to go up!” Prue frantically tries wanding the broken shield.

Heath shoots an arrow that narrowly misses a gargoyle. Several more scrolls hit the tree house deck, covering the floor in smoke.

“Stop! Please! Stop!” I beg, but the gargoyles keep attacking. I can’t tell if they can see us or they just know where we are.

I hear a loud shriek. Raina has made a direct hit to one’s wing. I feel bad as it shrieks in pain, but it does the trick. Seconds later, the gargoyles take off into the night.

We try stomping out small fires all around the deck, but it keeps growing.

I look around for something to put out the flames. Logan runs by me with a large, blue parasol.

“Stand back!” he shouts. He opens it up as if he’s expecting rain and pulls a lever on the hook. White foam shoots out of the parasol, covering the flames and putting them out. He runs around the deck with his umbrella until all that’s left are a few smoking patches.

Logan collapses onto a barrel bench and looks at us. “I always carry one of these Rainy Day Insurance Umbrellas in my pocket. It triples in size in seconds and can be used in a rainstorm to prevent a lightning strike or to put out a fire. Red Riding Hood invented it.” He gives me a knowing look. “Very handy if you have a grease fire in the kitchen.”

Corden high-fives him. “Nice job, mate.”

Logan beams. “Thanks! I’ve never saved the day before. I thought that sort of thing only happened when you slayed a giant or a beast.”

“Me too!” Raina says, eyeing the glittery pump in her hand with awe. “That felt good.”
