  58. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

At the top of the site was the name of the blog, The Chitter Chatter, written in the same style as the Seven Hills’ school emblem. Below was a small section introducing the author: Welcome to The Chitter Chatter Blog, your source for the newest gossip and the hottest scandals at Seven Hills. You will never find out my real name, but here I will call myself The Watcher. I’m right among you, waiting to expose all your dirty little secrets. Watch out, suckers.

I snorted quietly. Whoever was writing this blog clearly had a flair for the dramatic.

The rest of the website was plain and well organized, with different categories like Tops and Flops of the Week, Rankings,

Spilling the Tea, and Upcoming Events. And then there was the section that the girls had been talking about: Who’s New?

This was the one I clicked on, already preparing for the worst.

In alphabetical order, there was a photo and a few sentences about every new student.

I didn’t pay any attention to the others for now and scrolled until I reached Evelyn Greene. I had to close my eyes to gather myself for a moment when I saw the photo below it—it was a snapshot taken during dinner, showing me in the process of eating a sandwich.

The picture was taken from across the hall, which made it look grainy and unsharp, but you could still see most of my face.

I was biting into the sandwich, my braid almost undone and my blouse adorned with a bright red ketchup stain.

Couldn’t get much worse, I thought, until I read what was written beneath it.

Evelyn Greene is what one might call a complete and utter klutz. Not only does she manage to stain every shirt she owns, she also tripped down at least two stairs on only her first day here and apparently hasn’t worn a skirt in her entire life (a little tip, honey: you don’t sit with your legs spread wide open).

Besides that, she seems like your typical naïve schoolgirl. Perhaps not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but she’s trying, guys.

She has even made two friends already! Seth Williams (also new at Seven Hills) and resident teacher’s pet Amelia Campbell have taken it upon them to try and . . . I don’t know, stop her from embarrassing herself too much, I guess.

There’s really nothing more to say about her, except for the fact that the poor girl is Noelle Daniels’ new roommate. Bets on how long she will last?

I didn’t know what I had expected, but it wasn’t this. The Watcher, whoever it was, was cutthroat.

Trying not to be too affected by the snide remarks—at least I wasn’t the only one being made fun of and the person had mostly just taken shots at my appearance—I scrolled farther down and skimmed through a few more entries. One of them was Seth’s, the description of him as an oblivious, boring nerd with a sense of humor that no one but him finds funny somehow making my blood boil more than the article about myself.
