I remember Dad coming home on leave during his first tour. He’d been happy to see us, but he’d also been jumpy, preoccupied. I thought it was just because he’d been to war. “Did you hear from him?” I ask.

“He emailed me from the States,” Finn says. “We’d set up a code. He asked if I still liked Bugs Bunny cartoons, which meant he’d found a way to move the cash. I emailed back and asked if he still liked Porky Pig, which meant the coast was clear and I was ready and waiting to help.” Finn’s mouth turns down and he looks grim. “And then it all went FUBAR because of Perkins.”

Ethan frowns. “The guy who got shot in the shoulder?”

“He should’ve been shot in the head,” Finn says, and that angry look flickers in his eyes before he reins it in. “I’d told him and Yousef both that Jimmy and I would take care of them. They each deserved a part of that money.”

“Why only you four?” I ask. “Why not the three outside guarding the cars? They went with you and got shot at.”

Finn shakes his head. “We talked about it. The men in that room suffered the most. Cortez died. Perkins got his shoulder wrecked. Your dad was shook up from killing a man. Yousef kept Ahmed from shooting one of us. Plus he was an Iraqi interpreter working for the U.S. Army—his life was fucked if he stayed there, and he knew it. He could help us with Iraqi officials if it came to that with trying to get the money out. I saved those three grunts from being killed by that RPG, so as far as I was concerned, we were even.” Finn shakes his head again, this time like he’s disgusted. “But Perkins … He was like me, too banged up to go in the field, so they stuck him on admin duty too. We both worked in the motor pool in the Green Zone, office work, boring as shit. Perkins kept talking about getting a medical discharge, trying to figure out how he could get one and keep his VA benefits. And he kept talking about the money we’d hidden. Say things like ‘our retirement plan’ and grin, like we were sharing a big secret, never mind the fact that other grunts in the office could hear him. Drove me crazy. All it would take was one guy with a stick up his ass to say something to an officer. I knew if someone questioned Perkins he’d fold like a napkin. I told him if he kept running his mouth I’d break his other shoulder and both his kneecaps. His reaction was to go to the water treatment plant and grab a brick and hide it in his Molly.”

“Molly?” Ethan asks.
