Well, it had almost worked. Jenny had tried her best to forget that night on the rimrocks, anyway. She'd even tried to convince herself that there was some idiot, junior-high prankster behind all the tricks, laughing up a storm. Whoever was behind them wasn't laughing, though. He or she was deadly serious.

Ul

Suddenly Jenny jumped up, unable to sit still any longer. She was so scared she wanted to run. But where could she run to? Who could she run to? She was alone. Just like he wanted.

He? Brad? Jenny thought again of the big, good-looking football player and the desperation on his face when she couldn't remember what she'd heard. And that visit he'd made to her house, when he'd said how he hated Diana. Jenny had been scared then, scared of the fierceness in his eyes and the way they glittered whenever he looked at her. But that fear was nothing compared to what she felt now, now that she knew someone was out to get her. Someone crazy with anger, so crazy he'd pushed Diana off the rimrocks. That someone could be Brad.

Sally thought Brad had sent the snake. But Sally had been the one to dehver it. She said she'd found it on the porch, but she could have brought it. And she'd acted so strange this morning, up on the rimrocks, so nervous. Looking at her watch, like she was waiting for something to happen. Could she have arranged the fall of rocks, not knowing it would go wrong? Could she be in it with someone else? With Brad?

Jenny shook her head. It was hard to believe. But it was hard to believe that any of this was happening at all. It was happening, though. If she wanted to be safe, she'd better figure out who was doing it.

Jenny paced the porch, her mind racing, flitting

back and forth over the people she knew, until it finally landed on Dean. Dean Latham. In spite of that wink he'd given her, Jenny thought he was a cold fish. So calm, so rational, so logical when he*d talked about how sound could play tricks. And Jenny had agreed, thinking he was just trying to be nice. Her mind hadn't played any tricks, though, she knew that. But Dean might be. And he'd been in town today, she'd seen him. He could have shut the windows of her car. If he'd pushed Diana, or left her there, then he'd want to be very sure about what Jenny heard.

There was someone else who wanted to be sure, too, and Jenny's mind finally turned to David. She'd been putting him off, not wanting to face it, not wanting to admit that he could be the one. But he could. He'd been as anxious, as desperate as Brad for her to remember what she heard. And he'd been with her on the rimrocks. And that time they'd been separated was when he could have been with Diana, instead of looking for a bird's nest, like he said.
