  34. About the Author

“With the guidance of a Keeper, I can grow far stronger, at a much faster rate, than I can by myself.”

“We’ll be a team, then?”

“Not quite. A team would be a party of equals.”

“Right. I’ll be working under you. You’ll be kind of like my superior.”

“No, Jeremy. The other way around. I will become subservient to you.”

I couldn’t say that such a thing was unappealing, but I tried to keep the smile from my face. She seemed to sense that I found the prospect attractive; a smile played around her full lips, and she met my eyes.

“Shall we proceed with the next question?” Kyrine asked me after a moment.

“Go for it.”

“If you were to become a creature, would you prefer to crawl along the ground, soar above the heavens, swim to the depths of the oceans? Would you clothe yourself in scales, fur, or skin?”

I started to picture myself as a Steel-Clawed Wolverine, my favorite magical creature, and all of a sudden I was looking through new eyes. I saw a mountainscape at dusk, complete with high ridges, shady valleys, and rippling streams. My nostrils were filled with the scent of my prey on the evening air, and my limbs worked to track it down.

My senses were incredibly acute. I could tell just by my sense of smell that I was hunting a human. I leaped from the undergrowth and slashed my claws across the back of a man wearing Duck Hunter Camo fatigues. He cried out, and I bounded back into the forest, hidden within the bushes. My prey held up his hands in a mudra I didn’t recognize, and he called forth a spear of ice that shot toward my position. A moment before the projectile could strike me, my vision cleared.

I’d always had an active imagination, but this was something else entirely. I had actually been inside a Steel-Clawed Wolverine’s body, experiencing its senses as though they were my own.

“Did you do that?” I asked Kyrine once my vision had cleared.

“Yes,” she replied. “The magic surrounding the interrogation process is rather powerful.”

“Was I actually that creature?” I wondered, deciding to forget for the moment that she had called this process an ‘interrogation’.

“No, not exactly” she replied. “It was a special kind of dimensional magic that allowed you to function as though you were one. Did it provide you with an answer?”

“Not yet,” I asked. “I want to try it out some more.”

Could the dimensional magic allow me to experience the world through any creature I could imagine?
