She shook her head. “I spent years lying about who I was, and it almost killed me. You may craft your stories and plot your escape. I want you to make your choices based on what you need, but I’m going to walk out of here right now, go pick up my car, and drive back to my house.”
Brogan eyed her with a measured amount of respect. “They’ll pounce before you get halfway down the block.”
“I’ll give them all the truth that’s mine to give and nothing more,” Vic said gravely. “I’ll say I spent last night in the company of my friends, which I did. I consumed alcohol in moderation. When the lifeboats were called out from the local station, I took a room, where I spent the night, and had breakfast with the same friends before returning home. If they have any further questions about any other guests at the inn or at my home, I will suggest they address them to the proper staff, though I’d expect they won’t get far.”
Then she turned toward Sophia. “I may not share your talents for subterfuge, but please don’t harbour any doubts about my appreciation for them. I fully endorse your use of any means you find appropriate to protect your career or your honour.”
Sophia gave a bitter laugh, but Vic pressed on.
“My departure will undoubtedly offer you more and better options, and I trust you’ll chose one that affords you both safety and anonymity until we have the chance to speak again.”
Sophia seemed to recognise her resolve because even though her eyes burned with unspoken argument, she merely pursed her lips.
Then Vic expanded her attention to include the others, seeing on their faces a mix of fear, confusion, and admiration. “You all have shown me a great loyalty this morning, a loyalty I’ve never been afforded even by members of my own family. To say I am at your service and in your debt would be both an understatement and overly formal, but I do hope you know how proud I am to have friends of your calibre.”
“You’d do the same for any one of us, love,” Diane said.
Vic smiled at the truth of the statement. “I only hope I’m in a position to do so in the future.”
“I’ll walk with you.” Emma scooted out from the booth. “It’s my house those vultures are gathered around, and me strolling up with you will add credibility to your story.”
Her heart ached a little more at the offer, knowing full well that facing a horde of reporters unprepared was Emma’s actual nightmare, and yet she hadn’t hesitated to do so for her.
“Thank you, but first may I have a private word with Ms. LeBlanc?”
“Of course, take all the time you need.”
