Sophia bit her tongue to say that would only happen if they actually got back to work tomorrow, something she wasn’t at all sure of yet, but if Vic could take a night off, so could she. Thankfully, Vic offered a nice distraction from the questions trying to bubble up inside her by pulling into the driveway of a small white cottage.
“Oh my god, do you have, like, a secret little sex escape?”
Vic blanched. “A what?”
“I don’t know what you call it here, like a sex shed, but nicer?” Sophia glanced back at the house. “You know, a place to take your lovers so your wife— or, in your case, your mother and her flying monkeys— don’t know.”
Vic looked from her to the cottage and back again before she burst out laughing. “That’s Emma’s house, and we’re only parking here so we can walk to the pub.”
“Oh, that’s a much more mundane explanation.”
“Sorry to disappoint you with my lack of secret sex sheds.” Vic still sounded mildly amused by the idea. “It never occurred to me to secure an entire home specifically for the purpose of an illicit rendezvous.”
“Really?” Sophia asked. “Most of the men I know in Hollywood have them, and a great many of the women as well.”
Vic stiffened slightly as she twisted a single silver ring on her right hand. “I suppose it might be prudent if one were to do that sort of thing often, and I certainly wouldn’t cast judgement on anyone who did, but—”
Sophia’s chest tightened, not at what she’d inadvertently implied, but at how Vic seemed to have taken it. She hooked a finger under Vic’s chin and turned it until their eyes met. “I don’t have one, Vic.”
“Oh.” She blew out a shaky breath and her smile returned. “Not that it would be any purview of mine to have an opinion on whom you associate with when we’re not together.”
“No, it’s really not,” Sophia said, still cupping Vic’s chin in her smooth palm. “The same way it’s not my place to feel jealous at the thought of who will come after me for you, but feelings are a funny thing, aren’t they?”
Vic stared into her eyes, so many questions hanging unspoken between them. “They aren’t exactly logical.”
Sophia gave a little hum of agreement. “Not at all. But we’re both grown women who have understood what we’re doing from the beginning. And we’re both fully aware that when one makes the choice to play with fire, there’s a high probability of getting burned.”
