‘Yes please!’ Zoe, Victoria and Lily all replied at once before descending into laughter.

While Malie set about pouring the drinks, Lily answered the knock on the door and retrieved the tray Annabelle had promised to send up to the suite.

‘Are those—’

‘Oh my God, finally,’ Victoria exclaimed, almost pushing Lily out of the way in order to get to the almond croissants on the tray.

‘Lily, if you don’t get me one of those before V eats them all, I’ll be the one done for murder,’ Zoe insisted.

Lily raised the tray away from Victoria’s grabbing hands and placed it on a small table in the middle of the room. She passed Zoe the biggest pastry she could find, slapping Malie’s fingers aside as she did so.

‘Are you not having one?’ Malie asked.

‘I’m diving into the coffee first.’

Zoe frowned. ‘I don’t remember you being such a coffee fiend.’

‘A habit I must have picked up,’ Lily said, trying desperately not to think of Henry.

‘Any word from him?’

Lily shook her head. The girls knew that he’d left the night of the hen party and had since oscillated between promising to commit actual bodily harm, threatening to come to her flat and drown her in alcohol, romcoms or anything else that might work, and the worst … the sympathetic glances sent her way. But today wasn’t the day for any of that.

‘So what’s the plan?’ Lily asked between mouthfuls of the delicious coffee that still reminded her of Henry while Victoria ducked back into the bathroom.

‘You mean … you don’t have one?’ Zoe asked. ‘Seriously, are you OK?’

Lily smiled. ‘I am. I’m just … trying out something new. A little more carefree.’

‘Shouldn’t you wait until after today to do that? We need you, Lils, and your not-so-secret-superpower.’

Lily laughed. ‘Which is?’

‘I don’t know, you’re kind of like a fixer, you know?’

‘Yeah,’ Lily replied, trying to hide the ache in her tone.

A fixer.

She reached into her bag for the beautiful necklaces Ollie had gifted them at the hen party. ‘Don’t forget these,’ she said, holding the boxes out to the girls.

You genuinely don’t know why you have to be the one who fixes everything?

Henry’s words rushed into her mind before she could stop them.

We need you, Lils.

Is that why she did it? Because only then did she feel needed? Loved?

And suddenly she realized that she had felt it. The night she had shared with Henry. Cherished, worshipped and … loved.

‘Come to Mama,’ Malie said, reaching for the little box that had the label with her name on it.
