“My legs are beginning to cramp.” He stood up, then immediately crouched back down. “Celeste is going around the cars looking for someone.”

“Me.” Kelly sounded fatalistic. “She’s always after me.”

Adam peeked up over the car. “She’s getting closer. Stay here. I have an idea.”

He stood up. “Celeste!” he called. “You’re just who I wanted to see.”

“Me?” She sounded shocked and very pleased.

“Yeah, you. You remember Tony Pullman from high school?”

“Oh, yes.”

Kelly could almost feel the wind from Celeste’s fluttering eyelashes. Adam Hatten and Tony Pullman. Two knockout men acknowledging her existence.

“He’s looking for you.”

“Really?” Celeste said. “Where is he?”

“Inside somewhere,” Adam said.

“Maybe you’ll help me find him.” Her voice was seductive.

When Kelly gave a snort of laughter, Adam stuck his leg out and nudged her to be quiet. “I think he just wants to see you,” Adam said.

Kelly heard Celeste take a step closer. The trunk of the car was between her and Adam, but it looked like she was moving around it. Kelly gave a sharp tug on Adam’s jeans.

Adam shook his leg at her.

“Are you all right?” Celeste asked.

“Just a leg cramp.”

Celeste took another step toward him. “I could massage it for you.”

Kelly had to put both her hands over her mouth to stifle her laugh.

Adam yelled, “Tony!”

“Where?” Celeste asked.

“Damn! He just went into the dance. Who was that girl with him? Kelly, maybe.”

“I better go.” Celeste ran between the parked cars.

Adam didn’t look at Kelly, just put his hand down to help her up. “What a brat you are!” he said.

“Oh, Adam,” she said in falsetto. “How big and strong you are. Please let me massage your legs or anywhere on your body.”

He tried not to smile but couldn’t stop. “If you go home, what will you do?”

“I don’t know. Study. Watch Bonanza. Regular Saturday night.”

“I have a TV,” Adam said. “And a fridge full of food.”

“Any ice cream?”

“Four flavors.”

Kelly sighed. “I’ll meet you at your house. Ten minutes.”

“You’re on!”

Kelly got to Adam’s house right after he did. He held the door open for her. She didn’t tell him that she hadn’t been inside the house in years. He’d probably ask why. She made jokes about Robbie, but he was much too handsy for her taste. She wasn’t exactly afraid of him, but she didn’t allow herself to be caught somewhere alone with Robbie.

On the other hand, Adam was like her brother. After he married Vera, that’s just what he’d be. “I always forget how masculine this house is,” she said. “All stone and wood. Even the pillows are corduroy. Did your mom have anything to do with this place?”

Adam smiled. “If Dad said, ‘Do it,’ Mom did.”
