When Caitlyn was four, Dr. Carl died after being kicked by a horse that was in pain. Adam then built Kelly her own veterinary clinic on Hatten land.
Paul had inherited Dr. Carl’s place, and he remodeled the old clinic to use for his business.
It seemed natural that the people involved in Heritage Harvests would live together. Paul and Seth moved into the house. They bought a cute little cottage, moved it onto the property, and Mrs. Carl lived there. For a couple of years, Miguel and Caitlyn had lived in a trailer on the land. When an old schoolhouse came up for sale, Miguel bought it, moved it onto the property and made it into a home.
Caitlyn grew up surrounded by four loving adults, plus Forey and Rafe, who visited often.
But everything was different now. The happiness, the joy, even the love, seemed to have vanished.
And no one knew why.
Kelly told Adam, “If something isn’t done to fix this, it’s going to get worse.”
“It’s not our business,” he said.
Kelly glared at him.
“My mistake. What can we do?” he asked.
“We can do nothing. Vera is going to fix this since it’s her fault.”
“How is—?” he began, then stopped. “Oh. Right. She loved Miguel, but he didn’t want to leave. He didn’t want to hold her down, so he...”
“Right. Went to bed with Gabby and knocked her up. All Vera’s fault!”
“Think your famous sister will see it that way and come home?”
“If she doesn’t, I’ll go get her. Wherever she is.”
Adam tried to hide his smile. He’d learned that for all his wife’s cuteness, with her big blue eyes, she was made of steel. If Vera knew what was good for her, she’d do what her little sister wanted. “Will she stay in our guest room?”
“She’s going to have the whole house.”
“Oh?” Adam’s eyes widened in surprise. “And where are we going?”
“You and I are going on a trip.”
“What about the clinic?”
“I have someone to take over for me and Caitlyn is going to help him.”
“Is this animal therapy?”
“Sort of. Do you want to go somewhere hot or cold?”
“Galápagos is hot, right?”
Kelly grinned. Rampant wildlife. He knew the way to her heart.
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
As Caitlyn finished packing her suitcase, she looked around the hotel room to see if she’d missed anything. She’d spent the last three days in Lincoln, Nebraska, going to elementary schools to talk about organic foods. She’d shown them fruit from the Heritage Harvests orchards and from the grocery store.
