They laughed at that, then increased their questions.
“Granddad got my father a job at Sony right after college, so we ended up living all over the world. Hong Kong, Bangkok, Kyoto, South Africa and—”
“You didn’t tell me that,” Mike said.
“We haven’t exactly had a long heart-to-heart, have we?”
“But you sure know a lot about me.”
“Didn’t know you could shoot an arrow like Katniss Everdeen.”
She grimaced. “Really! I’m nothing compared to the men I learned from.”
“Bhutan, right?”
“How do you know that but didn’t know I can shoot a bow?”
“You—”
One of the men spoke up. “So how long have you two known each other?”
Griff smiled. “About thirty-six hours.”
The women were smiling sweetly.
“It’s not like that,” Mike said. “He works for Vera and Papi. He wants to do a bio on her.” Mike said it as though expecting a laugh, but no one did.
Mrs. Anderson looked at Griff. “If Vera can be persuaded, you’re the one to do it. You’re quite a charming young man.”
“Thank you.” Griff was smiling.
“He’s not as he appears. He’s—” Mike broke off at the clinking of glasses. The speeches were about to begin.
While dessert made with Heritage Harvests produce was served, the families of the bride and groom gave toasts and funny little talks about the couple.
There was nothing but triumph about Becks. She’d accomplished a lot. For Kyle, there was a sense of relief.
Griff leaned forward to whisper to Mike. “Sounds like they expected him to marry a convict.”
“From his own cell,” Mike replied.
With the meal done and the speeches given, the band set up and music began. There was a sweet moment with Becks and her father. He was a handsome man and they looked like something in a Disney movie. A teary Kelly danced with Kyle.
Next came Kyle and Becks. Halfway through, he motioned for everyone to join them. He loved company!
Griff stood up and held out his hand to Mike. “Shall we?”
“Gladly.”
Two hours later, they were still dancing. They allowed no cuts, no interruptions. Mike wanted to hear more about Griff’s childhood and he wanted to hear more about...well, anything at all about her.
They talked and laughed and danced.
At about nine, they glided past Miguel and Vera. They were seated close together against the tent wall and were in an earnest discussion.
“What do you think they’re talking about?” Griff asked.
“She wants to go somewhere and he wants her to stay here. It’s the only argument they ever have.”
“Who will win?”
“Vera. Papi only puts his foot down when it’s absolutely necessary, which means that I’m involved.”
“But now that’s not true?”
