After that call, Griff went to Mike’s Jeep and leaned against the door. She’d come back to it eventually unless she spent the night with the boyfriend. What did she see in him?
To his disbelief, Mike showed up minutes later and she looked angry. He’d wanted to do a dance of delight.
Instead, he tried to play it cool and let her tell him what was wrong. His hope was that it was over with the boyfriend. But her talk of marriage and rings nearly made him lose his confidence.
He was dying to tell her about the job offer. He had fingers crossed that she’d like the idea and say she very much wanted to take on the project.
But when he told her about it, she gave him some excuse about helping everyone, saying she had to do everything for everybody—just what Kyle had told him. And as far as he could tell, she and the boyfriend were still a go.
His phone dinged with a WhatsApp message. It was used around the world, and he could keep up with people wherever he was.
It was Miguel. They’d been texting since they met.
Breakfast? the text read. Unless you want to go to the parade.
Griff nearly sneered. To see Mike with the boyfriend? Would they be kissing and making up? No, thanks. He texted back. Great idea. Know where I can buy a suit for the wedding?
Yes. I’ll meet you at First Watch in OP, Miguel wrote.
“And what is OP?” he murmured, but didn’t ask. He’d find out from the motel manager. Minutes later, he was dressed and on his way to Overland Park. He had on a plain blue shirt—no more khaki. Too many safari comments.
Miguel was already at a small table when he got there. He looked as glum as Griff felt. He took a seat across from Miguel and placed his order. As soon as the waitress was gone, he said, “Vera went to the parade?”
“I should be so lucky. She’s doing something in secret. Probably arranging a job. If she doesn’t tell me what it is, that means it’s dangerous. ‘One last time.’ How many times I’ve heard that! But maybe I should just give up and go with her.” He looked at Griff. “I’m sure we’ll end up like your grandfather. We’ll step on a mine and boom! It’ll be all over.”
