“That’s okay. With Vera for a wife, I’m used to chaos and drama.”
“And her daughter is like her?”
He sounded so hopeful that Miguel had to work not to smile. “Half and half. A tiny injustice will make Vera ready to fight the world, but it takes a lot to rile Michaela.” He paused. “I was told about the archery show, but I only heard of Kyle Hatten and the new boyfriend. Where do you come in?”
“New boyfriend? She was looking at him like he was the last great hope. He could do no wrong. I thought they were a forever couple.”
Miguel was blinking at his tone. He sounded angry, as though he’d been betrayed. “We haven’t met him. What’s he like?”
“I think it says a lot that she’s his girlfriend but he didn’t know that she’s an Olympic-quality archer.”
Miguel leaned back on his elbows. “Maybe so, but my daughter has been taught to keep secrets. What’s his personality?”
“He carries himself like he’s had everything given to him.”
“How were you involved in what happened?”
“I was walking around and I saw a woman who looked like a young Vera and I guessed who she was.”
“You should have introduced yourself.”
“I tried to but the boyfriend told the guards he knew I was a drug dealer. They believed him without evidence. It took lots of ID to get them to believe I was who I said I was. Even then, I had to wait until they did a background check.”
“You don’t look dangerous.”
“Well, uh, to be fair, I was a bit dirty then. And hairy. And maybe too friendly to a pretty girl. Anyway, after that hassle with the guards, I wasn’t in the best of moods. I saw her go through the trees and I shouldn’t have done it, but I followed them to the archery range. When I saw that he was holding the bow wrong, I stepped in. I’m afraid I let my ego take over.”
“I take it you beat him.”
“Easily. But then she beat me.” Griff was grinning. “Not just won—she slaughtered me. That girl could have worked for Genghis Khan.” He turned toward the gate. Mike was gone, but in her anger she’d left the gate open. He turned back to Miguel. “So now what do I do?”
Miguel’s face gave away none of what he was thinking. “Depends on your goals in life.”
