His apology meant a lot to her. It was so much more than Brad had ever done. Perhaps she’d been a bit defensive.
She eyed him warily. “You won’t do it again?”
He held up his hand. “I swear not to overstep again.”
She breathed easier as the tension in her neck loosened. “Thank you. I appreciate it. And honestly I’m thrilled to have the chandelier.” Her gaze moved to the spot where it would hang. “It will look so fancy in here.”
“So I’m allowed to hang it?” His gaze searched hers.
“As long as I can pay you for it.”
He nodded. “But there’s no rush.”
“I appreciate it. I’d feel better if I could pay you back before you leave town. I’m taking on more baking orders.” It wouldn’t be enough money, but it was a start. “Are you sure I can’t do anything to help you before I leave?”
He smiled. “With you dressed like that? I don’t think so.”
She glanced down at her dress. He did have a point. “I just feel guilty—”
“Don’t. Go have a good time. I won’t be here that long.”
“If you’re sure—”
“I am.”
“You aren’t going to need the cart tonight, are you?” Since she rarely drove it, she’d made her golf cart available to him while he was working on the bakery.
“I’m good.”
“Okay. Just make sure everything is turned off before you leave.”
“I will, Mom.” He sent her a big teasing grin.
“Hey, I’m not that bad, am I?”
“No. You’re just right. Now go before you’re late.”
She checked the time. He was right. She had three minutes to get there. “Okay. Bye.” She bent over and fussed over Peaches again. “Goodnight, girl.”
She rushed out the door. The golf cart was parked behind the bakery. Thankfully, she didn’t have far to go as the Purple Guppy was on Surfside Drive just across from Beachcomber Park.
The outside of the pub was painted purple with big plate glass windows in the front, giving the passersby a glimpse of the purple, black, and white décor with the massive aquariums that were placed throughout the dining room. Cartoon fish were painted on the walls. It was a fun and popular spot for regulars and visitors alike.
By the time she arrived, there was one parking spot left. She slipped her golf cart into the space and rushed inside. They’d rented out the party room in the back of the pub. Lily and Josie were already there.
“What can I do?” Hannah asked.
When both of her friends turned to her with grins, she immediately glanced down to make sure her dress hadn’t ridden up. Nope. Everything appeared to be in its proper place.
Hannah glanced up to find her friends rushing over to her. Oh no. This wasn’t going to be good.
“So tell us,” Josie said.
“Yes, tell us everything.” Lily’s eyes lit up with interest. “And don’t leave anything out.”
“Tell you about what?” Hannah knew exactly what they were talking about, but she needed a little time to sort her thoughts.
