This particular Saturday morning, Hannah found herself sitting in her friend’s kitchen. She rested her elbows on the table and leaned forward. “I’m so happy for you both. I know we talked about the cake a while back, and you hadn’t decided on all of the details yet. But with the wedding a few weeks away, I need to know exactly what you want.”
Amelia Johnson’s face lit up as her cheeks grew rosy. “I can’t believe Jake and I are finally getting married. It seems so long ago when we met online. I don’t think I told you but we texted for a long time before we met in person. And then when we started to date, I lived in Boston and he was here on the island. Well, that is when he wasn’t out at sea on a fishing boat. After a year of that, Jake said he’d had enough of the separation and asked me to move here. Anyway, here I am planning a wedding.”
“You better believe it.” Hannah smiled. How could she not? Amelia’s joy was infectious. “You and Jake make a perfect couple. And I’m so glad you moved to the island. I can already tell that we’re going to be great friends.”
Amelia’s lightly freckled cheeks filled with color. “I’d like that.”
“And it’s going to be a beautiful wedding.” Hannah reached into her backpack purse and pulled out a pen and notebook. She didn’t want to forget any details. She had so much on her mind these days that it was best to write it all down. “When we talked before, we’d discussed a three-tier cake. Does that still work for you?”
“Yes. Jake and I were talking and we don’t want anything too fancy.”
Hannah nodded as she took notes. “Are you thinking fresh-cut flowers?”
When Amelia agreed, Hannah went on to ask her more detailed questions about the colors and details. She would order the flowers locally at Bea’s Posie Patch.
“That just leaves us with the flavor.” Hannah had baked a lot of cakes for the citizens of Bluestar over the years—some at the bakery and others on her own time. Her former boss at the Bluestar Bakery believed in the basics such as vanilla or chocolate cake with the standard butter cream. Any time Hannah had tried to introduce a different style of decorating or different fillings, Mr. Hamil said it took too much time. He was a nice man, but he was set in his ways.
“We decided on red devil’s food with the cream cheese filling.”
“Oh, that will be nice.” Hannah continued jotting down the details. “What about the people that don’t like chocolate?”
“Do people like that exist?” Amelia wore an expression of mock horror.
Hannah smiled and nodded.
“Oh, well, in that case our second choice was yellow cake with a lemon curd filling.”
“Sounds perfect. Will you need anything else…say for your wedding shower?”
Amelia kept smiling though the light in her eyes dimmed. “I’m not having one.”
