“Are you serious?” This was the first Hannah had heard of this business opportunity.
Josie smiled and nodded. “I was planning to wait until the grand opening to bring it up, but it seemed like you needed the encouragement now. I talked Mrs. Barton into the idea. She said we’d start with an order of donuts and if they go over well, we might add to the daily order.”
Hannah’s mouth gaped. She’d had no idea Josie had been planning this. “That would be wonderful! We could figure out what flavors—maybe we could rotate them—” Hannah halted her excited rambling as she realized she still didn’t have a functioning bakery.
“What’s wrong?” Lily asked.
“I just realized I can’t do it, what with the bakery the way it is.”
“Then hire Ethan,” Josie said.
“Speaking of which”—Lily gestured to the door—“he just walked in.”
“He did?” Hannah’s gaze moved to the entrance. There he stood. All six plus feet of him. Her heart picked up its pace as heat rushed back to her cheeks.
And then his gaze met hers. She knew she should turn away, but her body betrayed her and refused to move. It was as if there were a magnetic pull between them.
She wondered if he was there to see her. In the next heartbeat, she realized that was a silly supposition. This was a restaurant, and it was more than likely he came in for a late breakfast or early lunch. But was it possible he’d seen her through the window? Yes, that was possible. She halted her rambling thoughts. And then she realized she’d been staring at him for far longer than she should.
Lily cleared her throat. “I should be going.”
“Me too,” Josie said.
Her friends’ voices broke the spell. Hannah looked at her friends as they got to their feet. “What about the wedding shower? What can I do to help?”
“You did the invitations,” Lily said.
“And we’ve got the rest.” Josie sent her a smile before following Lily toward the door.
Hannah watched as her friends passed by Ethan with a quick hi. His attention quickly returned to her. He was headed in her direction. Her heart beat faster. She should move. She should do something—anything but sit there—waiting for him.

She smiled.
And then he smiled.
Ethan felt a warmth grow within his chest as he basked in Hannah’s sunny glow. It wasn’t like he’d stepped in the café just to see her. His life was complicated enough without letting himself start something that had absolutely no chance of a future, especially with him in New York and her there on the island.
He paused next to her table. “Hi. Can I join you?”
“Uh, sure.”
He sat down across from her and tried to think of some casual conversation, but his mind drew a blank. What was up with that? He never had problems speaking with women—not until now.
