“That’s so exciting. I wish I could be there.” Hannah meant it. “I love those goats.”

Sam shook his head. “Sometimes I think you’re in the wrong line of work.”

“But if I wasn’t a baker, who would make you a double chocolate, peanut-butter-filled cake with peanut butter candies on top for your birthday?”

His eyes lit up at the mention of his favorite cake. “You have a good point.” He gave her a hug. “Sorry this happened to you. Call me if you need anything at all.”

“I will.” She glanced over to where her mother was now chatting with Betty Simon. “Want me to get Mom?”

Sam shook his head. “She’s staying in town. She has an appointment later.”

“Oh. Okay.” And then she gave Nikki a big hug and kiss. “Be good for your daddy. And let me know as soon as the goat is born. Send me pictures.”

Nikki smiled. “We will. Love you.”

“Love you more.”

As her brother and niece drove away, Hannah’s fingers moved rapidly over the screen of her phone. She retrieved the number for the insurance company. The conversation was brief. They were sending out an adjuster today. She was certain they’d have more questions for her.

Next she did a little research and found a disaster restoration company located in Boston. She read their description and yes, they worked with water damage. And then she read the reviews. All except one review said they had done an exceptional job. And the one bad review was so bad she couldn’t help but wonder if it had been placed there by their competition. Then she checked out their Better Business rating. It was a stellar A+ rating.

These were the people she needed. Because even though her family and friends were offering to help, they didn’t know anything about water damage or replacing water pipes. And her insurance would cover the professional help. She made the call. After a brief moment on hold, she was able to speak to a human. They’d be there as soon as the insurance company approved payment.

So now she had a plan. It was a small comfort. But it was something.

“Hannah!” Newly-elected Mayor Tony Banks strode up to her. “I just heard what happened. I’m so sorry. I can’t imagine how devastated you must be.”

Though he was only a couple of years older than her, Tony always acted so mature for his age. He was always so serious with his collection of bow ties and suits. He kept his brown hair cut short. He was always so put together. And now that he was in office, he had plans for the island—plans to mix things up a bit.

“Thanks.” She wasn’t sure what else to say. She was still grappling with the devastation to the business and the threat to her dream.

“The whole town is going to be so disappointed about this setback. I know everyone was looking forward to the grand opening. Do you know how long it’ll take to fix everything?”
