Hannah arched a brow. “But I did see you out there earlier with Chief Campbell.”
Did her mother blush? It sure looked like it to him. Was there something going on between Hannah’s mother and the fire chief?
“It…it’s not like that,” Hannah’s mother said.
“Uh-huh.” Hannah turned to Ethan. “What do you think? Will you dance with me?”
Both mother and daughter stared at him. He shook his head. “I don’t dance.”
“Oh please.” Hannah’s pleading voice tore at his resolve. “Just this once.”
“Go on you two before it’s over.”
He had a feeling that no matter what he said he wasn’t going to win. So he might as well get this over with. “Okay.”
Hannah took his hand and led him to the crowded dance floor. For a moment, he stood there and looked around at all of the other people dancing around them. Some were slightly swaying to the music. Others were waving their arms about and doing footwork like they belonged on a dance show.
He turned back to Hannah and found her already dancing. She swayed side to side. And then he noticed her lip-synching.
He listened for a moment to the song. It sounded familiar. It took a moment but then he realized where he’d heard it before. It was the same tune Hannah had been humming on their bike ride to the farm. She liked this song.
He couldn’t help but smile and then he moved to the music. They definitely weren’t award-winning dance steps, but they seemed to gain Hannah’s approval.

It was such a great night.
A wonderful night.
Hannah felt as though she were Cinderella, at least for tonight. Her problems seemed far away and she was letting herself get lost in the beauty of the evening. It didn’t hurt that her escort cleaned up really well. Who was she kidding? Ethan’s hotness degree was off the scale no matter what he wore. Still, she was enjoying seeing him in a suit and tie.
When the song ended, they moved off the dance floor toward the refreshments. He turned to her. “You like that song.”
“I do.” She beamed at him. “It’s my sister’s song.”
“Your sister likes this song too?”
Hannah laughed. “She does. But what I meant is she is the one singing it. It’s her debut recording.”
He paused as it all came together. “Your sister is Em Bell?”
Hannah nodded. “That’s her. She’s in Nashville making her mark on the world.”
“I vaguely remember last autumn when the men at the firehouse all gathered around the television to watch a singing competition.”
“You mean Songbird. Emma won it last year. She says that she’s going to be a one-hit wonder, but I think she’s a rising star.”
“With a voice like hers, I agree with you. I had no idea your sister is famous.”
Hannah opened her mouth to say something but she was interrupted by Agnes Dewey. “It’s hard to believe you two have time for dancing the night away when the town’s biggest event is on the line.”
