  56. About the Author

Obviously it is impossible to offer a complete list of sources when many of those sources were living men whose remembrances were available only after the cultivation of their friendship. Likewise one cannot catalog definitely many years of reading on this and allied subjects. However, the author feels that he must express his debt to the files of the New York Tribune and the Philadelphia Press; to the publications of historical societies in various states—particularly Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Virginia; to original records of the United States and Confederate States War Departments, and of the U. S. Surgeon-General’s office; and to the books and pamphlets listed below. In each case there is reason for gratitude.
