- AFTERWARDS
‘We think the answer is yes. We recovered hairs from that dog on the plastic mac but the real question is this. Was she alive when you gave her that cuddle? Or was she dead?’ Bullivant checks his watch again, then gets to his feet. ‘We have a great deal to get through, I’m afraid.’ He’s looking at Tony. ‘I’d like to take a break for a while, reconvene a little later.’
There’s no negotiation, not a whisper of apology. Seconds later, both he and Brett have gone.
THIRTY-FOUR
This is a game-changer. A gentle confirmation of my watertight alibi has suddenly become something very different.
‘They’re looking to put you alongside the body,’ Tony says.
‘You mean the dog?’
‘Christianne. They seem to think you were there when it happened.’
‘Happened?’ I’m still dazed.
‘When she died. That’s where they’re taking all this. If they can make a case that you witnessed her death, then they can put you in front of a jury. What happens thereafter will be out of Bullivant’s hands, but that doesn’t matter to him. He’s looking for a scalp. Our job just now is to make sure it isn’t yours. The media would have a field day. And so would Bullivant.’
We’re back in the windowless little office, looking glumly at yet another polystyrene cup of thin coffee.
‘So, what do I do?’
‘No comment. Definitely. Give them absolutely nothing. Bullivant’s on a roll. He thinks he’s got the measure of you. But a couple of dog hairs won’t take him very far, believe me. He’ll have to come up with a great deal more than that.’
I nod. I’ve been thinking very hard about that plastic mac. For one thing, I’m certain I took it off at Bill Penny’s place before Christianne and I went upstairs with the dog. And for another, Christianne herself probably wore it. Lots.
When I share both thoughts with Tony, he scribbles himself a note. Then his head comes up.
‘He’s trying to shake you, upset you. It’s a tactic.’ He taps his pad. ‘Well remembered.’
‘Thanks. But tonight? Once they’ve finished with me? You’re really going back to Portsmouth?’
‘I’m afraid so, but don’t worry, I’ve got a couple of numbers I can ring. Someone else will be with you tomorrow if they go for an extension.’
