‘Do have a think about what I said then,’ Rhodri urged, pressing his knee momentarily against the inside of Gareth’s thigh in a gesture of reassurance before nudging it upwards provokingly. ‘If you want me to talk to one of the liaison officers in the Community Protection Unit, just let me know. This kind of thing needs investigating, really. The next time this guy decides to hit someone over the head he might just do some real harm. Think hard on that, Gareth, please. Just imagine how you’d feel if his next victim….’

‘I know that I should report it, Rhod,’ Gareth interrupted. Rhodri’s knee pressed gently again, the gesture calming.

‘I can’t really risk drawing that sort of attention to myself though, not in the kind of work I do,’ Gareth said, playing his fingers over Rhodri’s knee. ‘It’s all right for New Labour to have gays and lesbians in their London cabinet, but look what happened in the Assembly? And around here, you know as well as I do, that sort of thing just won’t wash.’

‘Probably all the other men this weirdo has attacked feel the same way, so we don’t ever get enough information to build up a case against him.’

‘Yea… yea… yea… so what is it about North Wales Police that’s keeping your closet door so tightly shut?’ Gareth jibed. ‘Put the shoe on the other foot, Rhodri and tell me what you’d do.’

His silence confirmed Gareth’s suspicion that the police did not easily perceive the gap between their own professional advice and personal practice.

For fifteen, maybe twenty minutes they lay together, exhausted in a sexually sated slumber. Gareth felt a residual dribble from Rhodri’s shrunken cock; it trickled down his thigh, tickling, but he couldn’t reach down to wipe it away because Rhodri lay across him. To distract himself he thought about the events that had led him to fall so willingly into Rhodri’s arms: the stupid row with Gwion… the pent-up sexual frustration and his fling in the bushes with Dan that had left him bruised and shaken. Rhodri farted and Gareth sensed the shallowness of their intimacy. Feeling awfully alone, he wanted to be held by Gwion – and no one else.
