Chapters (42)
“I went and had some coffee, I think. Maybe just wandered around. Nothing remarkable. Waited for Frank to show back up.”
“How long was he gone?”
“An hour or two, maybe.”
“And where did you see him again?”
“Back at the hotel, I think. We went out for dinner then. Or maybe we had room service. One or the other.”
“And how did he seem when he came back?”
“Fine. I’m not sure what you’re asking.”
“He hadn’t gone to get drugs or anything?”
“No. I would remember that. He was fine. Everything was back to normal.”
“And how did you get to the city on that trip.”
“I drove. The same as last time.”
“You drove your car?”
“That’s right.”
They stood up as if to leave and I stood up too.
“Anything else you can remember, anything else that might be helpful?” they wanted to know.
“I don’t think so.”
“You been back to the city since that trip?”
“I don’t think so,” I said.
“But maybe.”
“No,” I said. “I haven’t been back.”
“Not for any reason?”
“I don’t believe I have.”
“Okay, I think that’s all we have for now,” one of them said.
“How’d you get down to the city?” the other said, almost talking over his partner.
“I have a car.”
“What make?”
I told him.
“You ever drive a rental?”
“Not in a while,” I said. “I have my own car.”
“When was the list time you rented one?”
“I don’t know. A long time ago, I guess. More than a few years. At least five years, I bet.”
“Why did you rent then?”
“My car was probably in the shop.”
“And you took it to the city?”
“I don’t know. I could probably find out, if you need to know.”
“We’ll see,” the cop said and they left. On that note.
