I let them sit there and then I drove off. I was driving around, half-hoping they would follow me just so I could lose them, when the thought occurred to me that maybe they weren’t cops. Maybe they were somehow connected with Frank. It didn’t make sense, but I thought about it anyway. I turned around and went back to the house. I had wasted about a half an hour and by the time I got back to the target, the car was gone. Cops, I figured, which also didn’t make much sense. Maybe it was nothing. Frank would have left, waited for another time to do the job. I had the place figured. I could be in and out in a few minutes, gone long before anyone would notice. Even if they were cops, or someone else. They weren’t going to stop me. I circled around and then parked a few blocks away and walked back to the target. There was no one around.

I went inside the house and found what I needed in less than a minute. I could have done the job. I could have grabbed the stuff and been gone. But I didn’t. I’d like to say that it was because of the cars on the street, the ones watching me, but I hadn’t really thought about that. I thought I had shaken them. How would they even know to watch me? I hadn’t even thought that much about it, to be honest. I just stood there and decided I didn’t want to do the job. Not that day anyway. So I turned around and went back out. I got about halfway down the block when two guys approached me. “You’re under arrest,” one of them said, and they both showed me badges. I didn’t say anything. They took me to their car and put me in the backseat. No one said anything as we drove to the station. I didn’t have anything to worry about. I hadn’t done anything.

I never carried any ID, no credit cards, nothing with a name on it, not even a fake one, whenever I went into a house. I only had some cash in my pocket. All I had to do was to keep my mouth shut. They tell you right up front to stay quiet. “Anything you say can and will be used against you.” Anything. So I wasn’t going to say one word.
