“Good.” I nodded at his cell phone and asked, “Then what’s with the Samsung?”
“There have been several developments in the last couple of days you should be aware of.” Andy spent the next minute updating me on the stone pyramid they’d found and the cache of artifacts. After showing me pictures of three Incan artifacts on his phone, he said, “The night before you got sick, you may not have heard it, but someone blew their whistle.”
“I did hear it, but my head was starting to pound by that point.”
“Right, well, it was Farah. I ran to her campsite and when I arrived, Holland was already there. Farah said she saw a fer-de-lance. But then we found out Farah wasn’t alone. Jonathan Roth was in her tent.”
“Ah, man,” I said, tilting my head back slightly. “How’d I get that wrong?”
He ignored me.
“Then yesterday at the cache, Farah confided in me that there wasn’t actually a snake. She only blew her whistle to get Roth out of her tent. He’d unzipped it during the middle of the night, then nearly assaulted her. And get this: she recorded the whole thing on her phone.”
“I will destroy that prick,” I shouted. I tried to push myself up, but my energy level was in the negatives. “Tomorrow. I will destroy him tomorrow. Or the next day. Or at the premiere.”
“Well,” Andy said, his lips twisting to fight down a smile, “that brings us to the next development.”
He scrolled on his phone and said, “It will probably be easiest if I just show you the video. I had Darnell upload it to my phone.”
He handed me his phone and pressed play.
I watched as Jonathan Roth stood near the bank of a river. He walked over to Camila and said, “Oh, hey there. Are you just going to hang out in that tree all day?”
“If he does something to Camila, I’m going to seriously need you to carry me to base camp and find me a rifle.”
“She’s fine, just watch.”
I watched for the next thirty seconds as Camila spit on Roth, then against Holland’s advice, Roth waded into the murky river, and to my utter dismay/amusement, he was devoured by the largest alligator I’ve ever seen.
When the video ended, Andy and I both stared at each other for a few seconds. There were simply no words.
Andy finally said, “But that’s not the big news.”
“That the asshole director of the documentary you guys are shooting was just eaten by a huge fucking alligator isn’t the big news?”
“Nope.”
“Gina?” I asked.
He nodded. “I failed to mention that when we arrived back at the pyramid earlier today, the three Incan artifacts had been looted.”
“And you think they were taken by the group who abducted Gina?”
