Chapters (34)
This book is a work of fiction. But its strangest ideas are built upon a firm foundation of historicity. I’ll warn you, if you begin to dig into the facts of this story for yourself, and if you possess the same obsessive soul I have, you may find yourself in the back recesses of some forgotten library, blowing dust off books and glancing over your shoulder in fear! But whatever happens, please let me know what you find. As I said, this is a journey we’re on together. I’ve pointed out the edges of the path – but it’s up to you to pick up your torch and voyage into the darkness that lies ahead.
Acknowledgments
acknowledgments
Although this book was written in what could best be described as the solitary confinement of my mind, it was by no means created alone. There is a long list of contributors, co-conspirators, inspirers, mentors, and enablers, only a small portion of which can be mentioned here.
To my little family, I owe the world. They are my world. Karin, thanks for putting up with the strange hours and last-minute trips and general zaniness that became our life. I promise nothing but more for the future! Your love sustains me through the hard times, and makes the good times even more golden. Thanks for being my first reader, my first editor, my first everything. I am so lucky to have you! George, Cole, and Grace—my little chiplings, my little fire breathers and life givers and heart-warmers—all my love and devotion. This new journey would mean nothing if I could not share it with you.
Beyond the obvious contribution of my existence, I must thank my amazing parents—Tom and Bev Bronleewe (also known as Dad and Mom!). You are a beacon of light in a dark-filled world. Words cannot express my gratitude.
There are a few people who are responsible (I say “responsible” for those of you who would like to know who to blame for releasing this novel upon an unsuspecting public) for giving me the opportunity to fulfill a dream. Charlie Peacock was the first person to listen to my notion that I fancied myself a writer and not laugh. Rather, he kindly opened the doors to the wonderful world of book publishing for me. Charlie, I cannot thank you enough. The result of Charlie’s efforts was to be connected with the legendary Don Pape, whose mind has the ability to swallow new worlds whole. Don, thank you for letting me be one of the few privileged enough to be represented by you. Lee Hough, thank you for picking up the torch from Don and carrying it onward. Your wisdom and insight are a welcome shelter in the storm that is the creative life. I look very much forward to working more with you and the brilliant people at Alive Communications.
