  33. EPILOGUE

Ruby gritted her teeth, tensed for another more personal jab. If Marcia was a minion of Vallejo, what had he told her?

Ruby wasn't about to take the bait from a guitarist with dirt under her nails. Without the bright stage lights and haze, Marcia looked bedraggled, her eyeshadow too smokey and her eyes too sunken.

“You also tried to incite a riot,” Gabe said. “We could easily press that issue further.”

Marcia cast him another glance before looking back to Ruby.

“This is who you got to replace the other one, huh?” Marcia drawled. “Kind of cute, if you're into that kind of thing.”

Ruby blinked dispassionately. Just another jab to try and get under her skin. It wasn't working, but Ruby wasn't about to wait around until Marcia thought up something to really sting.

Gabe remained strictly neutral, his eyes only flicking to Ruby for a moment. There was more history between Ruby and Marcia than she could explain in the moment. You didn’t forget a woman you spent hours in an interview room with. Not easily. Now Ruby was regretting a lot of the tactics she’d tried back then to get Marcia to slip up.

“If you don't want to answer my questions,” Ruby said, “That's fine. You either come with us voluntarily or by force.”

“I'll answer your questions. Take me in. I don't have anything to hide.” Marcia said, the smile on her face growing broader.

“Right now, I don't think you have a lot of choices,” Ruby said.

Marcia's smile faded, her lips pursing. She looked over at Gabe.

“I liked the other one,” Marcia said. “Too bad about him.”

Ruby set her jaw, shoving Marcia toward the SUV.

“Did you like the song, Agent Hunter?” Marcia asked, almost in a sing-song voice. She was certainly not taking her situation very seriously. “It was for you. And for him. I call it Thirteen.”

Ruby slammed the door in her face.

CHAPTER TWENTY THREE

Sitting across from Marcia Reuben, Ruby got an unshakeable feeling of déjà vu. She had been in this position before and it made time melt. It didn't help that it was the middle of the night and it was easy to lose all sense of time in the confines of the interrogation room.

Gabe spread the contents of a file folder across the table, including the Man's Ruin tour schedule. All of the dates lined neatly up with the stabbing murders. Even the late-night stabbing on the street happened to be on a night the band didn't have a show.

“It looks like our murders only began once your band rolled into town,” Gabe said.

“What a coincidence,” Marcia replied.
