“No, she was scared of the whole thing. She refused to be involved,” Thorne said. “She never understood me, how liberating it is to have that kind of control. It's a thrill for me.”
“A thrill?” Ruby asked. “It's not a thrill. It's murder.”
Thorne made a dismissive waving gesture, as much as he could while handcuffed.
“It's a distant second to murder,” Thorne said. “Are you going to start storming onto film sets telling them their scenes are crimes?”
He sat back, looking too much like he was enjoying himself. Ruby didn't doubt that he was.
“When was the last time you saw Alannah?” Ruby asked.
“The night she broke up with me,” Thorne said. “She walked out of my apartment and never came back. I called her a million times and went around to her place, but she wouldn't answer the door and kept making excuses for why she couldn't see me.”
He had a faraway look, as if he was lost for a moment.
“I was heartbroken,” he said. “I was in love with her.”
“Even after you started doing your little re-enactments with April?” Ruby said.
Thorne shrugged. He held his palms up, as if he was saying, what can I say, I'm a bad man.
“I didn't mean any harm by it,” he said. “I was just trying to make her understand me.”
“So, you tried to make her a little more like you,” Gabe said. “You wanted her to have some of your… taste.”
Thorne nodded, grinning. “I don't know why you're making such a big deal out of it.”
Ruby hated giving him something he lusted for, putting him in a position his killer role models had been in, too. If there was some other way to get information out of him without feeding into his fantasies, she would have done that.”
“Did you go by Alannah's place recently? In the last week, by any chance?” Ruby asked.
Thorne shook his head, “No, I've been busy with April.”
“Maybe we should bring her in so she can hear about all this,” Gabe offered, “see what she thinks of your obsession with your ex.”
The interview was going nowhere. Ruby tensed, afraid Gabe was going to ask April to come back in, just so Thorne could see her again. She didn't think he would be able to stop himself. He wanted to see what Thorne's reaction would be. They could goad April and Thorne into fighting. That would be a double-edged sword. Thorne could potentially reveal his explosive anger, but Ruby couldn’t willfully put April in a position to get hurt.
Ruby diverted instead.
“What happened the last time you went by her place?” Ruby asked.
