Maybe old case files weren’t the only facet of her past she needed to return to. Dana’s spiritedness had reminded Ruby that her upbringing was part of what led her to the FBI. It was an undeniable part of her, no matter how much distance she put between herself and her childhood home in a trailer.

“That could be good,” Joce said, dedicated to putting a positive spin on it.

But Ruby caught Gabe’s eye, a more suspicious glance. He still didn’t know all her secrets, but she could see that he had a hard time believing she was willing to put duty aside for some sentimental visiting.

Not all her memories of home were pleasant, but she could tackle both the good and the bad before Vallejo could drudge up old feelings. She needed face her past if Vallejo intended to keep trying to use it against her.

“Thanks, Joce,” Ruby said, “and thank you both for bringing it all over.”

Ruby raised her arms pitifully to drive home her point. She was still bandaged and stitched up and under strict orders not to lift things.

Gabe just nodded, avoiding her gaze. Clearly, he had difficulty accepting gratitude from anyone, not just family members of victims.

His brow furrowed.

“How many boxes were there?” he asked, looking to Jocelyn.

“The archives had 12,” she said.

Immediately, Ruby turned, counting up the stacks of cardboard. She numbered them off, scanning all the piles.

13 boxes.

A chill ran down her spine.

“You took 12 out of the archives?” Ruby asked. “You counted them?”

Jocelyn shrugged helplessly.

“Honestly, I just carried them out to the car,” she said.

They all looked at each other, feeling the weight of that knowledge. Another box had been slipped in among the others, but where and when? And which box among them was the imposter?

Ruby had one more box than she bargained for. Now it was just a question of how long a certain someone had waited to slip her an entire box of clues.
