She knew exactly who Daisy was talking about. “Wilder.” Amelia sighed. “I know. I didn’t get coffee at her truck this morning because I felt bad. I tell her every day that I’m not ready to go out with anyone, and then I go out with someone else. I mean, she’s sweet, just my type, butch and really good looking, but—”
“But what?” Daisy said.
Amelia couldn’t quite put it into words. “There’s something about Victorija, I don’t know why or how, that I recognize and connect with.”
Daisy gave her a smile and a friendly squeeze. “I can’t wait to see this Victorija. She sounds delicious.”
“How do I look?” Amelia asked.
“Gorgeous. Oh, did you watch the YouTube videos from my channel last night?”
Amelia smiled. She had gone to sleep watching Daisy and her team’s investigation into witchcraft in Britain, and vowed to watch more. Daisy was engaging and interesting, just as she was at work.
“Yes, it was great. I’d love to watch some more.”
Daisy rubbed her hands together. “Excellent. I’ll send you some links.”
Amelia heard the bell on the shop door and shuddered. I shouldn’t be doing this. Something inside her was trying to tell her this was wrong.
“Introduce me to this woman who saved your life,” Daisy said.
They walked out to the front of the shop and Victorija had her back to them, checking her appearance in one of the many mirrors dotted around the shop. As they approached, Victorija turned around and a broad smile erupted on her face. “Mademoiselle Honey, you are a vision.”
Amelia felt red heat burn her cheeks. “Thank you. You look very nice too. Very dapper.”
When she said that, Byron’s image filled her mind. Don’t do this.
There was a long silence while Amelia was frozen with her thoughts. Victorija eventually said, “Will you introduce me to your friend?”
“Oh yes—sorry. Victorija, this is my friend and apprentice, Daisy MacDougall.”
“Pleased to meet you, Mademoiselle Daisy.” Victorija took Daisy’s hand to kiss it, and Daisy recoiled as if she got a shock.
Daisy rubbed her hand while looking intently into Victorija’s eyes, and then to Amelia’s neck. There was another awkward silence, and then Daisy eventually said, “Nice to meet you.”
Victorija looked suspiciously at her, then directed her attention to Amelia. “Mademoiselle Amelia, shall we?”
“I’ll just get my bag and I’ll be with you.”
Amelia and Daisy walked into the staff room, and Amelia grabbed her bag. “You sure you can lock up yourself, Daisy?”
“Sure…no problem,” Daisy said with a worried tone in her voice.
“Are you sure? I can call Uncle Jaunty if you like,” Amelia said.
“No, no, it’s fine. Honestly.” Daisy gave her a forced smile.
Amelia took Daisy’s hand. “Is there something wrong?”
“Just be careful tonight, okay?”
“Why?” Amelia was totally confused.
