Swanson gestured toward a different restaurant than the one where she’d eaten last night. “There’s breakfast in there.”
“I appreciate that. I have to go have breakfast with my father.”
Swanson raised an eyebrow. “Your father’s here?”
Rick spoke from behind her, startling her. “Her father is the reason we had to suffer through staying in this luxury hotel instead of sleeping on thin mattresses in the barracks at the embassy. His entourage took our place.”
She smiled as she turned to face him. “You sound really put out about that.”
He shook his head. “You have no idea.” Unlike his men, he wore his uniform. It was different from the one he’d worn in the jungle. That uniform didn’t have a name tag or all of the skill badges that this one displayed.
“What does your father do?” Fisher asked.
Cynthia raised her eyebrows. “Seriously?” She looked at Rick. “I thought you had a file.”
“Only Peña and I read it.” He looked at Fisher. “He’s Vice President Randal Myers.”
Swanson whistled under his breath. “No wonder Chukuwereije wanted to have a ‘chat’ with you,” he said, using air quotes.
Feeling a little uncomfortable, she cleared her throat. “Well, he wasn’t the vice president when I came out here.”
McBride and Peña arrived. Peña looked toward the restaurant. “Do we want to eat here?”
Rick shook his head. “I walked through the breakfast about an hour ago. The DFAC at the embassy has a better spread.”
“Will we have time to hit the DFAC?” Peña asked.
“Yeah. Debrief is at eight. Plenty of time built in.” He held up a set of keys. “I rented a van.”
Fisher stood. “Let’s do this.”
Rick led the way. He’d parked the van in front of the door. He opened the passenger’s door and made eye contact with Cynthia. She got in, and he shut the door and walked around to the other side.
As he started the van, he said, “I’m surprised your father didn’t send a car for you.”
She angled her body toward his. “My father no longer sends me cars. On my insistence, of course, but he respects my wishes.”
He headed out into the traffic. “You don’t like taking advantage of the luxury his high office affords?”
“I don’t like pomp and circumstance. Much sound and fury signifying nothing.”
He nodded. “Yeah, but now that car would be for security purposes.”
“True. But with your team, I don’t think I could be safer.”
He grinned at her. “That is probably accurate.”
