Dr. Andrea Greenman, for many things but especially for being the first person to say to me, in a way I could hear: “You’re a writer.”

Cécé Sutton, Pavlina Vyhnalkova, Anna Vhynalkova, and especially Irina Toala, for supporting my family throughout this journey.

My parents, Marilyn and Mendy Maierovitz: Thank you for raising us in a house full of books and Judaism, for supporting my education, and holding your breath along with me for my dreams.

My siblings, Eli Maierovitz, Dov Maierovitz and Shoshana Israel, and Yona and Meir Chaim Dan—you are all the pieces of my locket.

Miriam and Yale Drazin, for being a prototype for the best in-laws anyone could wish for.

My sister- and brother-in-law Meira and Barry Lebovits, for giving me lots of firsthand experience of being in the home of a large, loving, and community-involved family.

And to all the families whose homes I used to love spending time in growing up, as well as to my parents for making our home that place for my friends. And to my children’s friends for choosing to spend time in ours.
