MABLE: (Sees LIZ.) Oh, good—she’s back. I knew she couldn’t stay away from us for very long.

SALLY: (To MABLE.) She just threw my camera over the edge!

MABLE: Your what?

SALLY: (Yelling.) My life’s work!!

MABLE: Maybe now you can get a real job.

(LIZ turns and walks calmly back downstage past SALLY and sits herself back down in stage right chair. She crosses her legs, picks up washrag, and continues cleaning her feet as the rest simply watch her.)

MABLE: (To LIZ.) So, you couldn’t get enough of us, huh? (Pause. Silence from LIZ.) You’re not fooling anyone, sister, you know that, don’t you? This silent treatment.

(LIZ continues cleaning her feet with rag.)

LUCY: (Stoned.) Nothing to say.

SALLY: She threw my camera into the San Fernando Valley.

LUCY: Oh, get over it.

(Throughout this next scene, SALLY works her way to extreme upstage center as though she can’t believe she’s just lost her life’s work, along the same path that LIZ took, until she reaches the spot where LIZ threw the camera and equipment.)

MABLE: (To LIZ.) I’ve been onto you all along. Talking to yourself or—whoever it was. Babbling. Screaming in the middle of the night. That was you screaming—wasn’t it?

(LIZ hunches her shoulders, shakes her head, continues cleaning her feet.)

LUCY: Of course that was you.

MABLE: We’ve all been onto you, all along. All of us.

SALLY: (As she crosses upstage.) Vindictive bitch. Destroying the evidence.

MABLE: (To LIZ.) I’m used to treachery and delusion, you know. When Whitmore left me—

LUCY: (To LIZ.) That’s her husband—

MABLE: (To LUCY.) He was your father.

LUCY: He’s dead.

MABLE: He was still your father.

SALLY: (Still moving upstage.) He wasn’t my father.

MABLE: (Loudly.) He was everyone’s father! (Pause.) Anyway—anyway—don’t get me off track here. When Whitmore suddenly went away and abandoned me—

LUCY: (About LIZ, who continues cleaning her feet.) She’s not paying attention.

MABLE: (Rising in volume.) When Whitmore went off and left me high and dry! That’s when all this began to happen! All this grief! This sudden internal emergency. (Pause.) I went away. Where was I? Wisconsin. My summer home. The North Woods, wasn’t it? I thought, “This is where I can get ahold of myself.”

LUCY: (To LIZ.) That’s what she thought.

MABLE: Grief is what it was. Grief! Plain and simple. That’s what drove me up there.

SALLY: There it is. Down there. I can see it. Smashed to tiny pieces.

(LUCY rolls MABLE to the table next to LIZ.)

SALLY: Can you hear me?

LUCY: (To LIZ.) Now pay attention!

(LUCY returns to her former place behind MABLE’s wheelchair. LIZ remains seated, stares at washrag on floor. MABLE continues.)
