LIZ: (As she cleans her toes.) They’re grown, aren’t they? The kids.
SALLY: Yeah. I guess. Still—
LIZ: What?
SALLY: (Sees LIZ’s bloody feet. Pause.) What have you done to your feet, Liz?
LIZ: Running.
SALLY: Barefoot?
LIZ: Can’t run in these. (Holds shoe up.)
SALLY: Why are you suddenly running? You were never a jogger.
LIZ: There’s lots of things you don’t know about me.
SALLY: (Sudden outburst, slams table with her fist.) Why are you suddenly running!
(LIZ calmly crosses her legs again and goes on cleaning her other foot with rag. Pause.)
LIZ: I run when I’ve come to the end of my rope.
SALLY: Oh—oh, so now what? Now it’s time to start running until you bleed! Now it’s time to suddenly start talking! Now it’s time to start fucking my boyfriend! Is that it?
LIZ: Shh. (Pause. Calmly.) I was just experimenting.
SALLY: Experimenting.
LIZ: I was curious.
SALLY: About what?
LIZ: To see if he’d notice.
SALLY: What!
LIZ: (Pause.) My—flesh and blood.
SALLY: Didn’t look like he was having any trouble with that!
LIZ: My—actuality.
SALLY: Oh— (Pause.) Oh, I get it. So I owe you something now?
LIZ: You’ve always owed me.
SALLY: You’ve come back to collect, is that it?
LIZ: Don’t be melodramatic.
SALLY: I suppose you want your heart back too!
LIZ: (Long pause.) If you could, how would you do it?
SALLY: I’d just—do it all in reverse, I suppose. Bring you back to life. That’s what you want, isn’t it?
LIZ: Then—you’d be dead.
SALLY: Yeah.
LIZ: It might not work.
SALLY: No.
LIZ: We’d—both be dead.
SALLY: Yes.
LIZ: Then where would we be?
(Pause.)
SALLY: Here—I guess—or—
(Long pause as LIZ slowly turns to SALLY and stares at her, then slowly stands, still barefoot. LIZ crosses upstage to SALLY’s bed, kneels down beside it, and pulls out all the camera equipment. SALLY stands.)
SALLY: What are you doing?
(LIZ, holding all the camera equipment in her arms, walks deliberately back up middle of stage to deep upstage center. SALLY makes a move toward LIZ as she walks away.)
What’re you doing!
(LIZ stops deep upstage center where she entered, holds camera high above her head with one arm, and tosses it over the edge upstage. It disappears into the void. Pause then—a very loud crash as though glass windowpanes and metal have collided with concrete from a great height. SALLY runs toward LIZ.)
What the hell have you done to my camera!!
(SALLY continues to run toward LIZ, then stops abruptly when MABLE, in wheelchair, and LUCY, pushing her, suddenly enter from down right. LIZ remains upstage with her back to the rest of them. LUCY is very stoned on MABLE’s drugs.)
