Here the writer of Hebrews uses an analogy from everyday life to illustrate how we should respond to God’s discipline. Our human fathers disciplined us imperfectly, yet we respected them because we knew it was for our own good. How much more should we yield to God’s perfect discipline and hold Him in awe?

These verses display a contrast between our human fathers (more accurately translated fathers of our flesh) and our heavenly Father (rendered here as Father of spirits). Here the writer sets down the basic rationale for accepting God’s discipline: God is perfect; human fathers are not.

Our Human Fathers Disciplined Us as It Seemed Best to Them; Our Heavenly Father Disciplines Us as It Is Best for Us

Even with all the best intentions in the world, good human fathers make mistakes. They under-discipline; over-discipline; fail to discipline at all; or discipline from the wrong motives, in the wrong way, or at the wrong time.

The discipline of God never misses the mark. It is perfect in its timing, its application, and its intensity. He always disciplines in fairness and firmness to achieve His perfect purposes. The superiority of God’s discipline gives us good reason to subject ourselves to it with patience, humility, and gratitude.

Our Human Fathers Disciplined Us for Earthly Reasons; Our Heavenly Father Disciplines Us for Heavenly Reasons

A father on earth disciplines to teach and shape his child into a responsible adult who functions well in society. He focuses mainly on practical realities the child will face in everyday life. This, of course, is good and necessary.

The discipline of God also shapes us into responsible citizens, but ultimately His focus is much higher. He takes the longer view. He knows that our time on earth is but a droplet in the vast sea of eternity, so eternity is where he directs His attention. Just as an earthbound caterpillar has no clue that its destiny is to fly, we have no clue as to precisely how we fit into God’s eternal purpose. It’s because we see it all with caterpillar minds. Our earthly father does his best to train us to be good caterpillars, whereas our heavenly Father, who knows our eternal destiny, trains us to soar. God designed us for heaven and eternal fellowship with Him, and He is determined to shape us into heavenly creatures.

This is why God’s discipline doesn’t always make sense to us—why accepting it requires faith and trust as we pray: Lord, You know Your plan for me and I do not. You know every part of me that needs work. Please do whatever it takes to get me there.
