Eden was spared having to answer by Willow. “Actually, Auntie, Eden doesn’t talk to her family.”
Isla paused. “Ah. Pack of arseholes, are they?”
Eden had snorted so hard that tea came out of her nose.
As they drew toward Locanda De Gusti, Willow pulled her sideways.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” He drew them to a halt under a streetlight. “I just need a moment with you.”
“We’re late!”
“Fuck it. Everyone’ll live.” Willow pressed his forehead to hers. “Have I told you how much I love you today?”
She nodded.
“Then, I’ll tell you again. I love you more than anything in the whole wide world.”
Eden smiled. Tears were close, but tears were always close these days. It seemed to be a side-effect of therapy, sobriety, and falling in love. Everything was sharper, yet softer. Brighter and more subtle. Food tasted better and music hummed through her at all hours, keeping her awake at night.
“I love you, too,” she told Willow. “You were worth waking up for. Even though I was so fucking scared.”
“I know, my brave little girl.” Willow’s hands closed on her belly. “Are you sure you want to tell everyone tonight?”
“I do. I couldn’t think of a better group of people to break the news to.”
“They’re all going to lose their shit.” Willow stroked her stomach. “I still can’t believe it.”
But Eden could. From the moment they’d started trying, she’d known it would happen. It was her dream made manifest. Before the pee-stick showed two lines, she’d already known she was pregnant. She felt her body change, knew she was no longer alone.
“Are you okay?” Willow asked. “Are you tired?”
“Not at all.”
For the past four months, she’d been DJing pregnant, drinking lime and soda out of the hydro cup Willow had bought her. Her energy was still high, and she was only just starting to show. Luck, or maybe the result of all of Willow’s vegetables and exercise. She was excited, not only for the baby but everything that would come next.
Andy and Cheryl knew she was pregnant and had postponed further tours in favour of getting her more studio time. Eden was hoping by the time the baby was born, she’d have an entire album ready to cut with Sun Cat records—her new label. They’d be pissed she couldn’t tour right away, but as soon as she recovered from the birth, she and Willow planned to hit the road with the baby. The only real change on tour, as far as Eden could see, was her wardrobe. There would be no more wedding dresses. She’d already told her label, her friends, and her fans. She’d worn her last dress at a knockout show in Oslo. She was done.
