“Nah, stay here and wait for the boys. I’ll be back.” Eden headed for the nearest set of cubicles. The wait was short for such a big party, but there was still a wait. She leaned up against the sinks and pulled her phone from her bag. She had a message from Cheryl wishing her a good night and… the room seemed to tilt sideways. Two texts from her mother. Eden knew she should ignore them, that she wasn’t in the right place, but her fingers were already pressing the notifications, making the messages expand.
Eden, Sienna would like you to be a bridesmaid. Come up to the house this Sunday for dinner, bring Sloan, and we’ll discuss and take your measurements.
Also, keep all of September free as that’s when the wedding is scheduled, and we’ll need you around for fittings and the bridal shower, and so on.
She was drowning, waves crashing over her head, filling her lungs with saltwater. A bridesmaid. Sunday dinner. All of September. She’d need to take time off her tour. She’d have a ringside seat to David marrying her sister. How the fuck had this happened?
A bathroom stall opened, and Eden shoved her phone in her bag and staggered forward, her feet feeling like they were pushing into marzipan. She sat on the toilet for a long time, her hands gripping her thighs. Someone banged on the door. “Hurry up!”
“Fuck.”
She wiped under her eyes and across her forehead before flushing the toilet. She moved between waiting occupants, avoiding their eyes, and heading for the only available sink. She could get through this. She’d go back to Willow and explain what her mum said and—
“Hi!” A tall brunette was smiling at her in the mirror. She looked like a Bratz doll in her shiny silver dress. Eden had no idea who she was. “Hi.”
Avoiding the woman’s eyes, she glanced at her reflection. She looked awful, pale and sweaty. God, she was going to be a bridesmaid. She’d have to wear some super expensive dress and—
The brunette tapped her shoulder. “I’m Lydia.”
Eden frowned. “I’m… Eden?”
“I know. You’re here with Sloan?”
For a second, she had no idea what she meant, then it clicked. “Oh, yeah. Willow. Yeah, we’re together.”
The woman’s smile shifted into something far less friendly. “Good luck.”
For the second time that night, Eden felt winded. “Excuse me?”
“I went out with him last year.”
“Oh.” Eden tried to imagine Willow and this huge glamazonian together. To her horror, the image fit perfectly. They were the same size, for one thing.
Lydia reached into her pink Chanel bag and pulled out a tube of lip-gloss. “He came up to me and told me I was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen.”
Her heart, already overwrought, was pushed out of an open window.
