Halfway through the screening, Eden noticed David wasn’t watching the movie, he was staring at Sienna. To this day she’d never felt such terror. Her heart had stopped in her chest, and she’d thought she was going to die.
Afterward, she’d tried to get David to come to her room, but he lingered downstairs, shaking her off and disappearing for long stretches. At midnight she went searching and found him in the kitchen sharing a bottle of wine with her sister. Sienna hadn’t showered yet, but somehow she looked as beautiful as Christmas morning and David was laughing, his head thrown back like he was trying to catch rain. Sienna was smiling in a way Eden had never seen before. Proud yet secretive. And some part of her understood what had happened. The rest had no fucking idea.
David didn’t come up to her room that night. He stopped replying to her texts. When she arrived early to orchestra next week, he’d surrounded himself with a wall of his buddies.
“It’s over,” Cheryl had snarled, snatching her phone away as Eden tried to call him for the hundredth time. “David dumped you. You need to accept it.”
But Eden couldn’t accept it any more than she could accept the world being flat. He’d said he loved her. He couldn’t have just stopped loving her. It couldn’t really be over. And then it came, the day she considered the last of her childhood. It was Easter lunch and she walked downstairs in the daisy-patterned dress her mother had picked out, and there was David sitting beside Sienna. Holding her hand like that was normal. Like it had always been that way.
“Hi Edie,” David said. “You look lovely.”
And she’d fallen through the floor and into the centre of the earth. Down, down, down.
Later, she’d cornered him in the living room, and this time her fists were balled in rage. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing?”
David laughed. “Edie, I get this is awkward but I hope you’re not going to be immature.”
She’d tried to confront Sienna, locking them both in the downstairs bathroom and screaming at her. But while she was shouting, Sienna just stared. When she was done, her sister examined her nails. “It wasn’t serious between you guys. Davy’s too old for you.”
Eden had shoved her right in the chest. “It was pretty serious when he was fucking me.”
She’d wanted to shock Sienna, to hurt her, to get her to jump out of whatever haze she was always in. But she just flicked the locked door open and walked away. Fifteen minutes later she and David were playing Cluedo with the rest of the family. Mother. Father. Kane. Augustine. Jenna. Anthony. No one gave a fuck.
