“But if she is pregnant, she could have used the castle tunnel to sneak up on Dooney and bend him to her will,” he said. “Make him back out of his wedding to Piper and marry her instead.”
“Or she thought she could and when he refused, she murdered him,” I said. I shook my head. I didn’t know Sunny at all, but it just seemed so unlikely. Trisha was another story; that one had crime of passion written all over her. Even Piper seemed the sort who could resort to murder if pushed hard enough, but Sunny? No.
Harry led me outside and we strolled through the garden. We were trying to look casual until we were out of sight of the castle and then we jogged across the hillside to the hidden door. There was no one guarding it and Archie hadn’t put a Staff Only sign on it yet, so I felt like entering the tunnel wasn’t a flagrant violation of the castle rules.
I kept watch while Harry pulled the door wide. When he waved me over, I scooted behind the trellis and followed him. He shut the door behind us and I flicked on the light switch. And there we were again, making our way back into the castle through the secret passageway.
“Should we call her name?” I whispered to Harry. “I wouldn’t want to startle her.”
“It might frighten her more if we do,” he said. “Assuming she’s in the tunnel, the idea of being discovered might scare her. I know you don’t think she’s the murderer but you have to consider the possibility, especially since she disappeared.”
“Maybe she’s just hiding because she’s afraid that whoever killed Dooney is going to murder her, too,” I said.
“That’s a good theory,” he agreed. “Either way, we need to find her for her own safety. It can’t be healthy to be pregnant and hiding. She needs to be eating regular meals and resting.”
The wall sconces didn’t illuminate the entire tunnel. We passed from each circle of light, straining to see up ahead. I didn’t see a person, and the truth was that I was less nervous in the tunnel this time. It helped that I knew we would end up in the library. I wondered if Archie would be there to chastise us again.
I really wished I could turn back time to that afternoon, when Dooney was obnoxious but not dead. Although, if I was being honest with myself, I would go all the way back to the day that Andre and I ran into Piper. I would never have convinced Viv to design the bridesmaids’ hats.
“What are you thinking about?” Harry asked. “I can practically hear the wheels turning in your brain.”
“Just that if I had it to do over, I would never have encouraged Viv to take this job,” I said. “What a disaster.”
