“Really?” I asked. “Did you happen to be looking out the window about twenty minutes ago? Because Harry and I were taking a stroll and we heard, well, not to gossip, but we heard a couple having an argument and I wonder if it was someone you’d recognized.”

“Really?” He looked intrigued. “Sadly, I wasn’t looking out the window then,” he said. “I was doing wardrobe management.”

I frowned in confusion.

“Hanging up my clothes so that they won’t get wrinkled,” he explained.

“Oh.” I bit my lip. I knew I should probably do the same but I was curious about the couple Harry and I had heard arguing. I knew it hadn’t been Piper, as I was certain I would have recognized her voice, and if I hadn’t, Harry would have, given that he had dated her and all. Yes, I was still processing, which reminded me.

“Viv, why didn’t you tell me that Harry had dated Piper?” I asked.

“What?” Andre’s eyes went wide.

“I know, right?” I asked him.

Viv glanced up from her novel. She frowned at me. “I’m sure that can’t be right.”

“Oh, it’s right,” I said. “Harry told me so himself.”

“Just now?” Viv asked.

“In the garden.”

“What made him do that?” she asked. She lowered the book into her lap. “I mean, he’s known about the wedding and that we were coming here for weeks. Why mention it now when it was really nothing?”

“It was the way Piper looked at him when she said hello to him,” I said. “My ex-girlfriend radar went off and I asked him if there had been something between them. He said they went on two dates.”

“Oh, pish tosh,” Andre cried. “Two dates is nothing. It’s that no-man’s-land between acquaintance and friend. Clearly, she didn’t even make the friend cut.”

“No, she didn’t,” I agreed.

“What did Harrison say about it?” Viv asked.

“That they were the two most boring dates of his life,” I said.

Viv laughed. “He got that right. Poor Piper is the most boring person I’ve ever known. That’s why I’m refusing to do the hen party. I already know it will be deadly dull.”

“Harsh,” I said.

“Truth,” she countered.

“So, tell us what you heard,” Andre said. “We can study the other couples and place bets on who we think it is.”

“And this wedding just got so much more interesting,” Viv said. She beamed at us and I laughed.

“You two are terrible, but all right,” I said. I recounted the argument for them.

“Not much to go on,” Andre said. “It could have been staff having a disagreement.”

“I suppose,” I agreed. I wasn’t convinced, however, and I was about to argue my case when a knock on the door interrupted me.
