“Did he?” I asked. “Or did he love her and when you found out about it, you decided to murder him and have Sunny take the fall? That’s why she was in your wedding party, wasn’t it? You needed her here so you could make it appear like she poisoned him because he wouldn’t leave you for her, when it was actually the opposite.”

“Does Harrison enjoy these flights of fancy of yours?” Piper asked. “I think they’re tiresome.”

I ignored her. My head was spinning with all of the implications of her actions.

“The blackmail was your idea all along,” I said. “I’m assuming because your parents were not giving you everything you wanted for the wedding. Your father mentioned something about the cost of hats. He didn’t seem pleased.”

“He’s as cheap as chips and not in a good way,” she said. Her expression was pinched in displeasure. “But that doesn’t mean I had anything to do with Dooney blackmailing my mum.”

“Except you knew exactly what she was wearing in the photos, so you’ve obviously seen them,” I said.

She feigned a yawn as if I was boring her.

“What I can’t figure out is why you murdered Quentin,” I said.

“Because I didn’t?”

“You said Dooney told him everything and you accused your mother of murdering Quentin because he took over blackmailing her,” I said. I shook my head. “But he didn’t have the photos, so I’m guessing he wasn’t blackmailing her, was he?” She stared at me with a death glare that, I’m not going to lie, was very intimidating. Still, I continued. “He was blackmailing you.”

“That’s ridiculous,” Piper scoffed. “What could he possibly blackmail me for?”

It was a shot in the dark, but I went for it. “For being the person who cooked up the blackmail scheme to begin with? Quentin was going to go to your parents, wasn’t he?”

She continued to stare daggers at me and my heart rate picked up. Where was the constable? Still, it was thrilling to have my powers of deduction firing on all engines. I wished Harry were here to see me busting the case wide open. Where was he? For that matter, where were Andre and Nick?

“Was it Quentin going to your parents and telling them it was you who’d planned the blackmail that made you decide to murder him, or was it the amount of money he was asking for?” I asked.

She laughed but it was a bitter sound. “He didn’t want money. He wanted me. He thought I’d marry him to keep things quiet. Ha! You do realize you can’t prove any of this. It’s all just speculation.”
