We made our way to the library without taking any wrong turns. Once there, Andre excused himself to use the restroom, and Nick went with him to make certain nothing happened to him. We were definitely on high alert since the maze incident.

Harry and I prowled around the library. Neither of us said it, but we were both looking for whatever Rita might have lost. I wondered if our search was in vain and Archie had already found whatever it was. Rita had sounded furious when she barked at Archie. Whatever she’d lost, it was important.

Harry took a seat in one of the wing chairs, and picked up a magazine from the table next to him. He was thumbing through the pages while I checked and rechecked the bookshelves. I was beginning to wonder if one of the books was actually a fake and when you pulled it off the shelf, it opened to a hollowed-out inside where things were hidden. Things like documents, keys, jewelry, maybe even an updated will.

Harry let out a low whistle, and I turned away from the shelf I was examining to see what the fuss was. While I watched, he turned it sideways and his eyes widened.

“What is it?” I asked.

“I think I found what Rita was looking for,” he said.

I hurried across the room and glanced over his shoulder. My jaw dropped.

The photo was Rita, a younger version, but definitely Rita, wearing thigh-high red leather stiletto boots and a matching leather bustier and miniskirt, all while holding a riding crop. The expression on her face was one of invitation.

“She was a dominatrix?” I choked.

“Maybe,” he said. “Perhaps she was just a model, but the outfit does look like it’s out of some sort of kink catalog.”

Harry flipped through the magazine. There were more photos, and she wasn’t alone in them. They removed any doubt that she was not just modeling an outfit.

“Oh, wow,” Harry said.

“This is it!” I cried. “This is what she wanted Archie to find. See how the photograph was taped inside here? Someone was hiding it in plain sight.”

“Pretty big risk to take,” he said.

I closed the magazine to read the cover. It was a trout-fishing magazine.

“Not really,” I said. “Who’d want to read this?”

He looked at me with a baleful glance.

“Other than you,” I said.

“I expect it wasn’t supposed to be left here on the table,” he said. “Whoever had those pictures—”

“Dooney,” I said. “That has to be his secret. He was blackmailing Rita with these photos. Rita, who wants nothing more than to be accepted into high society.”

“Blackmailing her how?” Harry asked. “He was already marrying her daughter and giving Rita the access to society that she wanted while he was gaining a substantial chunk of their wealth.”
