Trisha went very still. “What do you mean?”

“Dooney let me in on a little moneymaking scheme of his before he died,” Quentin said. “And since I no longer have my best friend to look after me, I’m going to use his secret to make myself rich.”

I squeezed Harry’s hand, trying to signal that I was freaking out. He squeezed back. Was this a confession? Had Quentin murdered his best friend because of the secret Dooney had shared?

“How rich?” Trisha asked.

“Come here and I’ll tell you,” Quentin said. He patted the sofa cushion beside him invitingly.

Ew. At that, I wanted to leave but I didn’t want to miss a confession if one was forthcoming.

With a giggle, Trisha pushed up from her chair and wobbled her way around the table to plop down beside him. Her wine splashed with the momentum and Quentin scooped it out of her hand and set it on the table.

She pushed his shoulder. “Tell me.”

He leaned back against the couch and crooked his finger, gesturing for her to come closer. I had a sudden vision of Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf, although honestly Trisha was about as far from an innocent young woman as a person could get.

She laughed and shimmied closer. He waved her in until she was almost in his lap, then he grabbed her about the waist and pushed her down onto the sofa so he could lean over her. I felt Harry stiffen beside me. I knew he would kick in the door if he thought Trisha was being taken advantage of, and I was right there with him.

Instead, she let out a throaty sexy laugh. They proceeded to kiss and Quentin whispered seemingly lewd suggestions in her ear.

Okay, that was enough! Whatever he was about to tell her had obviously been pushed aside in favor of their mutual lust.

Harry and I backed away as one. We hurried farther down the hallway a bit before we spoke.

“Gross,” I said. “I think I need a shower.”

“Right,” he said. “And perhaps some bleach for my eyes.”

I laughed. “That’s what we get for eavesdropping.”

“I really thought we were on the brink of hearing a confession,” he said. “I mean, if Dooney had a moneymaking scheme and he told his best friend, who is also broke, then it stands to reason his best friend might have been the one to murder him.”

“I had the same thought,” I said. “Otherwise, I would never have lingered there.”

“Yes, because as you said—gross,” he agreed.

We walked along the corridor until we turned down the hallway to our room. We had just passed the first door when the sound of a scream ripped through the quiet like a siren blast. Harry and I both jumped and turned to face each other.
