“Doesn’t it strike you as odd that he was behaving like that?” I asked. “Sunny said they were planning to run away together, that he was going to duck out of the wedding and jilt Piper at the altar.”

“Rude,” Viv said.

“But if that was the case, why was he so pleased with himself when he was here?” I asked. “He kept talking about his fortunes turning around, that this wedding was the best thing that had ever happened to him, and that he’d never have to work again.”

“I remember,” Viv said. “I assumed that he was just reveling in the windfall of money he would get when he married Piper and achieved her family’s dream of belonging in the rarefied air of the upper class.”

“I did, too,” I said. “But what if he didn’t mean that?”

“What else could he have meant?” Harry asked. “Sunny has a promising career but nothing like the money he’d be seeing if he married Piper.”

“We still don’t know who he was talking to in the garden,” I said. “Maybe Dooney was murdered not because he cheated on Piper but because she found out he was going to leave her at the altar.”

“Would he have been demanding money from her to not leave her at the altar?” I asked. “Or maybe, he was demanding it from her family?”

“I only know Matthew May by reputation in the financial world,” Harry said. His expression grew serious. “I would never, ever cross him.”

“I’m beginning to prefer the idea that a curse took Dooney out,” Andre said.

“Hard to prove, though,” I said. I glanced at the time on my phone. “The wedding was supposed to happen a few hours from now. Any idea if they’ve planned anything in its place?”

“Like what?” Viv asked.

“I don’t know,” I said. “A wake for Dooney? A service? A gathering? Anything?”

“Not that I’ve heard, but I can go to her room and ask Piper,” Viv said. “One concerned friend to another.”

“Perfect,” I said. “Come on, Harry. There are more spots in the castle I want to check out.”

My intended had just started eating a pasty and shook his head. “I don’t know what you’re thinking, but we eat first.” He pointed to my empty plate with his fork.

“But there’s a murderer roaming the halls,” I protested.

“And we won’t be able to fight them off if we’re starving,” he said. He pointed again at my empty plate.
