“I did?” He looked alarmed that he might have made a promise of which he had no recall.
“Yes,” she said. “When you took our engagement photos, I asked you to do the wedding and you said yes.”
Andre frowned. “I did? I don’t remember. That was a rather stressful day.”
“I know Dooney was late and not behaving his best,” Piper said. “But you know he’ll show up for the wedding and he’ll have his company manners, I promise.”
“I—” Andre began but she interrupted him.
“I’m counting on you, Andre.” She said it with the firmness of a governess disciplining a student. Andre wasn’t having it.
“When we took your engagement photos, Piper, I was under the impression that the wedding would be in town,” he said. “I only heard that it was in the country from another client.”
“Perhaps it was, that was months ago after all.” Piper nodded thoughtfully. “No matter. I’ve always dreamed of being married in a castle, and Waverly is stunning. My father managed to convince them to rent the entire place to us for the big day. It’s going to be the grandest wedding since Will and Kate. The main staircase is the stuff of fairy tales. You’re going to love taking pictures of me when I make my grand entrance.”
“It sounds amazing,” I said. I wondered if this was something Harry and I should consider, a big old castle to tie the knot in.
Harrison was an investment wizard in the financial district, and I knew if I really wanted a castle for our ceremony, he’d be game, but was a castle really who we were? Then again, he had a new business with a lot of people to impress, so maybe it was. Hmm.
“You should come, too, Scarlett,” Piper said. I turned to look at her. It was like she could read my mind. “After all, Waverly Castle is the hottest spot for a society wedding, and this would give you a chance to check it out while it’s in use.”
“That’s a brilliant idea,” I said.
“No.” Viv smashed my hopes to bits without even a smidgeon of remorse. “We have too much happening in town. Ascot is in mid-June and it’s one of our biggest events of the year. We have so much to do before then, we simply can’t take on another wedding. I really am sorry, Piper.”
Her voice was full of regret, and I thought it was actually genuine.
“But my wedding is two weeks after Ascot,” Piper protested. “You will absolutely need a rest after that and the castle has a spa.”
“A spa,” I said. Visions of massages, facials and mud baths danced in my head.
I glanced at Viv. She was the artist and I wouldn’t push but, oh, getting away for a weekend after the flurry of Ascot would be fabulous timing.
